IMPORTANT NOTE #1: See the 'BB' in the product number? That's a big deal in both external and internal Western Digital hard drives these days. The 'BB' in Western Digital Hard Drives indicates the normal 2Mb Caching system embedded in the on-board hard drive controller. The 'JB' in the drive that follows this one (the 250Gb version) features the more preferred 8Mb Cache embedded in the on-board hard drive controller.

Why the big deal? For collectors of MP3's its a match made in heaven. Those of you who collect MP3's know that most Radio Episode MP3's are around 8Mb or smaller in size. That means that one episode will usually fit completely within the cache of one of the 'JB' or 8Mb cache model hard drives (both internals and externals). When you're cataloging or accessing a large number of episodes at a time, one of the 8Mb cache drives will function much more efficiently than the 2Mb cache drives. You'll find the 8Mb drives will command a $50 - $100 premium over a similar 2Mb Cache drive of the same specification. Most 8Mb cache drives are usually accompanied by a 7200rpm spindle speed as well, whereas the 'normal' large capacity drives these days still utilized the 5400rpm spindle speed.

IMPORTANT NOTE #2: See the presence of both Firewire AND USB 2.0 interfaces on this drive?

What's the big deal? Again, for collectors of MP3's its a match made in heaven. Most modern computers, whether Mac or Windows based, have either a Firewire or USB 2.0 interface integrated into them. If you want to swap or add files with a friend, you can hook one of these 'Combo' external drives to EITHER Mac's OR PC's equally. The Hard Drive controller does all the conversion work for you. Its transparent to either Mac's or PC's. When comparing two external drives, all other specifications being equal, always choose the combo interface drive over the single interface drive. Most 'combo' inerface drives command a $50 - $75 price premium over their single interface counterparts.

This is my personal favorite. I have six of them now and the only problem I had with them was external. One of the external power adapter's failed and I had to have Western Digital overnight me a replacement. This is the drive I'd recommend to any Golden Age Radio Collector. (. . . and no, I don't own even one share of Western Digital stock). By the way, when I got my first 4 I was still working, and they cost me $459.00 apiece as an early adopter. $349.00 is a bargain basement price for these superb drives.
