Background

Newspapers remained one of the World's most important media throughout the Golden Age of Radio and the Golden Age of Television that overlapped it. America was even more fascinated with Radio dramas of all kinds that focused on the newspaper business in one form or another:

While the list above is by no means comprehensive, it's fairly representative of the serial melodramas and situation comedy, western, juvenile adventure, mystery and crime dramas that held the interest of America throughout the Golden Age of Radio. The vitality, deadlines, investigative reporting, subject matter, and pure escapist adventure of the more glamorous 'beats' in the World of Journalism leant themselves to compelling Radio.

The more popular newspaper-themed dramas of the era ran for between six and ten years. The common denominator of the more popular newspaper dramas were those of the crime, human interest, and mystery variety, such as Casey--Crime Photographer, Night Beat, and The Big Story.

Throughout the same period, the American Tobacco Company had been a prolific sponsor of Radio programs:

  • 1928 The Lucky Strike Dance Hour
  • 1931 The Metropolitan Opera
  • 1932 The Lucky Strike Hour
  • 1933 The Jack Pearl Show
  • 1934 The Lucky Strike Musical Hall
  • 1935 Red Trails
  • 1935 Your Hit Parade
  • 1937 Hollywood Parade
  • 1937 Melody Puzzles
  • 1937 People In the News
  • 1937 Your News Parade
  • 1938 Design for Happiness
  • 1938 Kay Kyser's College of Musical Knowledge
  • 1938 The Eddy Duchin Program
  • 1939 Ben Bernie [Musical Mock Trial]
  • 1939 Music By Malneck
  • 1940 Information Please
  • 1941 CBS Looks At Hollywood
  • 1941 The Jerry Lester Show
  • 1942 The Gracie Fields Show
  • 1943 Your All-Time Hit Parade
  • 1944 Believe It Or Not
  • 1944 The Jack Benny Program
  • 1945 Wayne King
  • 1946 The Fabulous Dr. Tweedy
  • 1947 Light-Up Time
  • 1947 The Big Story
  • 1948 Your Lucky Strike
  • 1949 Your Hit Parade On Parade
  • 1951 Talk Back
  • 1953 The [Horace Heidt] Youth Opportunity Program

Needless to say, American Tobacco was one of the era's savviest--and most experienced--sponsors. Having just sponsored their Frank Morgan situation comedy vehicle, The Fabulous Dr. Tweedy, when the series failed to attract the ratings they'd hoped for, American Tobacco began casting about for a dramatic vehicle to attract more consistent ratings.

American Tobacco and NBC Debut The Big Story

That dramatic vehicle became The Big Story, an anthology of compelling news story dramatizations submitted by newspaper editors and journaists themselves. The writers, journalists and editors submitting their stories were awarded $500 for every story submitted, dramatized, and aired. Sponsored initially by American Tobacco's 'Pall Mall' cigarette brand, the series ultimately showcased its 'Lucky Strike' cigarette brand for the final two years of the canon.

Often focusing as much on the submitting journalist as the actual story, each journalist submitting a dramatized story was prominently identified and credited at both the beginning and end of each program. The $500 remuneration was announced as an 'award' for each winning dramatized story at the end of each program. The practice of announcing the "Pall Mall Award" for "notable service in the field of journalism" and its accompanying $500 check, continued through all 381 broadcast episodes of The Big Story.

Throughout the canon, the producers took great pains to stress the authenticity and factual basis of the stories presented--with the customary ending disclaimer that all names used in the production were fictitious, except for those specifically exempted. It should also be noted that the overwhelming majority of the stories eventually dramatized were submitted by working--and often highly-respected--reporters, editors and journalists. Over the course of the entire canon, newspapers from every part of America were represented--a few at least twice.

The format for the program was, by all critical accounts, one of its most compelling features. Each production framed the scripted story with the submitting reporter's name and newspaper, teased a bit of the script, then, after the commercial announcements, a narrator framed the remainder of the script. The narrator proved to be one of the more successful elements of the format, providing all necessary exposition and time-displacement to move the story along. The series' first narrator was gifted Radio, Film and Television character actor Berry Kroeger. Kroeger remained in the role of narrator through Episode No. 34, at which time regular supporting actor Robert Sloane assumed the narrator role. It was Kroeger's elastic countenance that was used to create the caricature of a typical reporter of the era--Press Pass in hatband, and a [presumably] Pall Mall cigarette hanging from his lips.

And indeed, the narrator continued to prove to be a useful dramatic bridge throughout the series. The stories, culled as they were from all parts of the country and representing virtually every newsbeat imaginable, were well served by an experienced, talented expositor to help the stories along. The crime stories themselves were a fairly sordid, salacious lot for the era. They were undoubtedly also watered down quite a bit enroute to their radio dramatizations.

Berry Kroeger in Demon Seed (1977)
As noted from his casting card at left, Berry Kroeger had already been a Radio performer for 10 years by 1942. Young Berry Kroeger was born, raised and educated in the Alamo Heights area of San Antonio, Texas, a very affluent annex of San Antonio. His family was prominent in San Antonio's society and well respected and admired from all contemporaneous accounts. Berry's father was an independent construction contractor as well as an active philanthropist and local volunteer to all manner of civic causes.

While attending Brackenridge Senior School, Berry Kroeger was actively involved in the school's drama productions. Kroeger briefly attended the University of California at Berkley after graduating from high school, returning in the summers and for holidays to perform in--and eventually direct--many of San Antonio's Little Theatre plays. Indeed the draw of San Antonio's rich theatrical traditions eventually brought Kroeger back to San Antonio by 1931, to complete his education at the local Junior College, while becoming much more active in the community theatre productions in and around San Antonio. The San Pedro Playhouse, especially, came to be Kroeger's theatrical home for several years.

Between 1931 and 1935, Berry Kroeger continued to commute back and forth between California and San Antonio dependent only upon the demands or offers of Radio work on the coast or theatrical productions back home in San Antonio.

In September 1935, Kroeger packed up his auto and committed to giving Hollywood one good, solid run, driving from San Antonio to Hollywood to settle in for the duration--if his luck holds up. With some four years of stage directing experience and seven years of acting experience under his belt, Kroeger has every expectation of succeeding in Hollywood in any medium he chooses.

CBS Radio signed Berry Kroeger to a two-year contract in 1936, which eventually leads to numerous appearances in Calling All Cars, a production well suited to Kroeger's extraordinary range of character ages, versatility and authority. He also shows versatility in Dr. Christian, CBS Forecast, Columbia Workshop, Suspense, and Words at War for CBS. Kroeger also shows his durability as he begins to appear regularly on several of the daytime serials of the era.

From the 46-07-07 San Antonio Light:

Berry Kroeger, former San Antonian, is much around Broadway these days and has changed his first name to Barry. He will have the leading role in the CBS Grand Central Station program starting July 6.
Before Kroeger went to New York he played with the Pasadena Playhouse in California, with Max Reinhardt in Hollywood. Among his Broadway plays were ''The World's Full of Girls" and the Margaret Webster productions of "The Tempest" and "Theater."
He has acted in such radio programs as "The Falcon," "Light of the World," "The Inner Sanctum" and "The Thin Man."

Through the remainder of the 1940s, Kroeger continues to work in Radio--mostly out of New York, while occasionally appearing on the Broadway Stage with stars such as Ingrid Bergman in Joan of Lorraine (1947). 1947 also found Kroeger in two small, but breakout roles in Iron Curtain and Down To The Sea In Ships. His role in Iron Curtain was the better role, but he recieved far better screen credit in Down To The Sea In Ships even though much of his scripted performance ended up on the cutting room floor, for time.

From the May 1947 issue of Radio Mirror:

Radio Mirror Berry Kroeger head

BERRY KROEGER is a tall Texan, reminiscent in appearance of Orson Welles and a junior edition of Charles Laughton. And, in further resemblance, he too is a first-rate actor. Broadway has noted him in Nunnally Johnson's "World Full of Girls", "The Tempest", and "Therese", with Dame May Whitty, Victor Jory and Eve LeGalliene. His radio jobs are many: Big Sister, Inner Sanctum, The Thin Man, Grand Central Station, Bulldog Drummond, and now the new NBC Feature Assignment.
Berry belongs to that small group of actors in radio who are characterized by their ability to portray any type of a role, from a cultured villain to a romantic
mid-western physician.
Fifteen years of work in radio have polished up this versatility; Berry can handle a fireside comedy, major tragedy or an international crisis with equal ability. He did his first broadcast in Texas, then went to California for more broadcasting and further dramatic study at the Max Reinhardt School.
Son of a Southern Pacific roundhouse foreman, and of a mother whose forebears come from Newcastle, England, Kroeger is a master of scores of dialects and accents, domestic and imported. Texas left no marks on his natural speech, nor did it make an outdoor man of him. His favorite sport, he says, is "Coughing for exercise."
Like many an actor working in radio, Berry likes the theater as a vehicle. He has even written himself a play—a two-character psychological drama called "August Reckoning."
Unlike many a radio actor, however, he's in the theater currently playing the role of the romantic poet, Chartiers, in Maxwell Anderson's "Joan of Lorraine," starring Ingrid Bergman.

By the time the 1949 Alan Ladd film noir feature, Chicago Deadline began screening, Berry Kroeger had begun the inescapable move toward being typecast as all manner of unsavory character of one type or another. No longer the tall, muscular, youthful appearing actor--in film in any case--the remainder of Barry Kroeger's acting career would find him playing almost exclusively naughty fellows of on type or another over every medium--Stage, Screen, Television and Radio.

But it was indeed Television that truly occupied the lion's share of Kroeger's time from the 1950s on. This, on top of what had already become an almost 25 year career on the Stage, a 20 year career in Radio and a 10 year career in Film--by the age of 38.

His hair having turned prematurely gray in his late-20s, Kroeger found himself hoist by the incredible range of his own voice and characterizations. While only 38, Kroeger often found himself in roles--even in Television and Film--portraying men as old as their 60s and 70s. And in Radio, Kroeger, true to his reputation, was still portraying characters aged from 8 to 80.

Television was a bit kinder to him than Film. His Film characterizations tended to become more and more sinister and evil with each passing year, while his Television work, while clearly leaning more toward his darker characterizations, provided many truly delightful, against-type characterizations throughout the remainder of his extraordinary Television career.

All told, Berry Kroeger's Radio career eventually spanned almost forty years, his Film career almost thirty years, his Television career almost forty years, and his Stage career, for all intents, his entire adult life in one capacity or another.

And yet, in spite of the rather cruel typecasting of this great character actor, he was by all contemporaneous accounts, unfailingly generous to peers and students alike, constantly volunteering for one worthy cause or another, a tireless contributor to his community theatre productions--great and small--throughout his life, a multi-talented artist in several disciplinces, and an overall truly fine gentleman in every respect.

While we miss him, an extraordinary number of his performances over Television, Radio and even Film are now readily available--a fitting tribute to one of Radio's truly great unsung workhorses.

Quietly Yours . . .

6'3" Ernest Chappell, born and raised in Syracuse, New York was literally and figuratively, Syracuse's fair-haired boy. Star athlete in high school and Syracuse University, local sportscaster, graduate of Syracuse University, local D.J. and emcee, Radio Director of local Syracuse station WFBL [''First Broadcast License''], and local columnist for the Syracuse Herald with his own byline, Riding The Waves with Chap.

Universally well liked and admired, for Chappell, Radio was his oyster for 50 years throughout The Golden Age of Radio.

Radio Pioneer Hopes To Begin New Career

One of radio's pioneers was in Denton this week for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Conley, 108 Forest St.
Ernest Chappell, voice of the American Tobacco Co. on radio and television for more than 20 years stopped in Denton en route home from a 10,000-mile business - vacation trip.
Accompanying him were his wife, Margie, and their two children, Susie and Jimmy.
Chappell began in radio 42 years ago, when the industry was an infant of 15 years.  In the past, his fame spread to the extent that he received mail in New York City, addressed simply, "Chappy."
Now, he's preparing for semi-retirement from that field, only to embark upon  new career.
Chappell said, "I'm not interested in making a pile of money now--I don't need that.  But what I am interested in is doing something about this country's sense of values."
He plans, with other backers, to found a non-sectarian college in Palm Beach, Fla., and eventually to add it to a school of engineering for radio and television aspirants.
Also included in Chappell's future plans is ownership of management of a television station.  He'd like to work with Dr. Tom Moody, president of the Southern Baptist Pastors Association, in founding a new method for aiding in the spiritual development of the young people of America.
The method he has outlined would begin daily telecasts in the morning with a "thought for the day."  Noon programs would be designed to help viewers develop the habit of meditation.  And final moments of daily telecasting time would be a presentation of a hymn by such artists as Kate Smith and "Tennessee" Ernie Ford.
But looking ahead to a new field occupies only a portion of Chappell's time--he also recalls stories about some of the big-name stars with whom he's worked during the past 42 years.
Rudy Vallee was one.  And there was Orson Welles on CBS' "Hello, Americans," and David Ross and Edward R. Murrow.  And a list too long to complete.  And, of course, North Texas State University artist-in-residence Eugene Conley.
Conley and Chappell met "back in '35 or '36" when the future Metropolitan opera star was still singing in church choirs.
Chappell was in Boston to hear auditions for one of his radio programs.  He heard Conley sing, and sent him on to New York City.  They've been fast friends ever since, even though Conley and his wife eventually came to Texas and NTSU.
When Chappell became an independent contractor in 1932, he was asked to cast a program for Herbert Diamond Co. of New York.  It became the Herbert Diamond Entertainers, with Vallee singing two numbers.  A dance band played and guest artists appeared regularly.
"I thought the show was going along fine," Chappell recalls.  "The firm was selling it's merchandise and they liked the show.
"Then one day the manager called me into his office and said, "Look here at this stack of letters."
"All of them were protesting against presenting dance music on Sunday afternoon.  So the show--and Vallee--had to go.
"Later I put him in another show on Thursday nights, and that was okay.  But not on Sunday, no matter how popular he was."
