Background

From Radio's earliest days, the great novels and plays of the great masters found their way into showcases or 'cycles' of their finest work. As radio audiences of radio's Golden Age became more sophisticated their demand for more well-mounted and carefully adapted dramatizations increased with the wider adoption of Radio as an entertainment medium.

As the radiowaves became flooded with all manner of orchestral and dance music, comedies, juvenile adventures, crime dramas, variety novelties and serial dramas, the finer straight dramatic productions tended to stand out even more. Among the more prestigious offerings of the era:

1925 NBC University of The Air
1929 Radio Guild
1935 The Magic Key of RCA
1936 Columbia Workshop
1937 Eugene O'Neill Cycle
1937 Radio Theater of Famous Classics
1937 Shakespeare Cycle
1937 Steamlined Shakespeare
1938 Great Plays
1938 Mercury Theater
1938 Pulitzer Prize Plays
1941 The Free Company
1943 Horror Inc.
1944 The World's Great Novels
1947 American Novels
1948 Great Scenes From Great Plays
1948 NBC University Theater
1950 Damon Runyon Theater
1951 New Theater
1952 Best Plays
1956 CBS Radio Workshop

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it does reflect the more widely applauded and critically acclaimed exemplars from The Golden Age of Radio.
