A rather harsh review of CBS' Mystery Theatre and Inspector Hearthstone from May 17, 1949
A rather harsh review of CBS'
Mystery Theatre and Inspector Hearthstone from May 17, 1949

NBC's Mystery Theatre began airing with much fanfare on September 7, 1943. The series promised stories from the greatest classical and contemporary mystery authors--and production values to match. And it kept its promise. It was aided from the outset by the addition of an 'annotator'--as it was described in the 1940s--named Geoffrey Barnes. The annotator served in the role of expositor, filling in on the plot development as necessary and providing a back-story when needed. The apparent distinction made between a narrator and an annotator, was a matter of degree. Mr. Barnes, a distinguished and celebrated amateur criminologist in his own right, was apparently on hand to help the listener analyze and understand the various mysteries and their underlying crimes within each script.

The program appears to have aired sustained for its first three months, with three to five sponsors beginning to make an appearance with Program #17, The Mystery of The Seven Keys of December 28, 1943. There is an alleged circulating program titled Homicide for Hannah, that may have been the first Mollé Mystery Theatre, but there is no proof that title ever actually aired (see the Provenances entry below on this subject). This is the first circulating program in which the program refers to itself as Mollé Mystery Theatre. But throughout its NBC run, we hear sponsorship by Ironized Yeast, Energene, Bayer Aspirin, Sterling Drug, and Mollé.

To its credit, NBC went to great lengths to promote the script titles, performers and authors of each program to the nation's newpapers. From 1943 through 1948, Mystery Theatre was one of the most well documented and promoted radio programs of its time. Indeed, so many details were available for its entire NBC run that this was one of the easiest logs we've developed in some time. We have solid, highly detailed newspaper listing provenances for almost ninety percent of the first 237 programs.

Sadly, the transition from NBC to CBS didn't fare as well for Mystery Theatre. NBC and CBS were waging a major war at the time, each network nakedly poaching the other's greatest Radio talent and programs, wholesale. But judging from the way NBC and CBS--and Frank and Anne Hummert--promoted and supported their respective line-ups, it's clear that CBS was dropping the ball for the greater part of 1949. Frank and Anne Hummert were legendary talents in the area of producing and promoting melodrama. Indeed, an extraordinary number of the serial melodramas of the era were produced and developed by The Hummerts. But Mystery Theatre wasn't a melodrama genre--or format. That didn't stop the Hummerts from turning it into a melodrama under their watch. The franchise declined in popular and critical favor from that point forward.

In all, Mystery Theatre in its various incarnations ran almost continuously from the Fall line-up of 1943 well into 1952--an impressive nine year run in its various guises. It ran four years over NBC, three years over CBS and two years over ABC. For NBC the program aired as either Mystery Theatre or Mollé Mystery Theatre. Over CBS, the program aired as [Frank and Anne Hummert's] Mystery Theatre and Hearthstone of The Death Squad. And finally, over ABC, the program aired as Inspector Mark Saber of The Homicide Squad or Mark Saber Mysteries.

CBS and the Hummerts began rolling out spot ads and teaser articles about the Inspector Hearthstone programs in the Fall of 1949 but by the end of the 1951 run of Mystery Theatre the spot ads dwindled. Despite the more lackluster, melodramatic scripts, the Hummerts, relying on Alfred Shirley's celebrity and reputation, actively promoted the Inspector Hearthstone programming with their usual relentless and efficient skill--when it suited them. Apparently the reviewers of the era weren't very impressed by The Hummerts' scripts or cast (see Radio Review at left sidebar).

Inspector Hearthstone of The Death Squad held some promise to breathe new life into the franchise with distinguished actor Alfred Shirley (of Sherlock Holmes fame) in the role of Inspector Hearthstone. Inspector Hearthstone was first introduced in February and March episodes of CBS's 1949 Mystery Theatre run. From 1949 to the Fall of 1951, Inspector Hearthstone of The Death Squad appeared in all but a few of the remaining Mystery Theatre programs, until CBS simply changed the production name to Inspector Hearthstone of The Death Squad on August 30, 1951.

Alfred Shirley snapshot bio from 1952's Who's Who In Radio and Television

One can only surmise CBS' rationale for preserving the name Mystery Theatre while producing only Inspector Hearthstone programs for almost two years. It would seem as if Frank Hummert was more comfortable working with a single protagonist for his programs, hence his almost universal focus on Inspector Hearthstone of The Death Squad as the central figure in almost all of the CBS Mystery Theatre programs from 1948-1951. One of CBS Mystery Theatre's most redeeming elements--annotator Geoffrey Barnes--was eliminated with the solo Hearthstone of The Death Squad that followed. The Hummerts chose, instead, to go with a melodramatic intro to each program more reminiscent of Challenge of The Yukon or The Lone Ranger, than the CBS Mystery Theatre format of the previous two years. Indeed, by 1952, Hearthstone of the Death Squad was being heard virtually every day of the week--somewhere, usually in repeats. CBS had apparently abandoned any further promotion of the series. Throughout most of 1952, Hearthstone of the Death Squad was in disarray. As it was, Inspector Hearthstone of The Death Squad finally left the airwaves December 31, 1952--for the most part in repeats in various small outlets and at varying days and times.

By the beginning of Hearthstone of The Death Squad in 1951, Television had already taken root. To further complicate the Radio and Television choices, a competing Mystery Theater from ABC aired on October 3, 1951 running in parallel with both CBS Mystery Theatre's Hearthstone of The Death Squad and ABC's Mystery Theater featuring Inspector Mark Saber of the Homicide Squad. If the intent was to confuse, both programs succeeded, and both came in for tepid reviews--at best. In addition there were parallel Television programs titled both Mystery Theater and Homicide Squad. It's apparent that Radio and Television programmers had finally taken off the gloves in earnest. In the final analysis, the Inspector Hearthstone of The Death Squad run from 1951-1952 appears to have been nothing more than thirteen or so original Hearthstone programs intermixed with a year's worth of repeats of CBS Mystery Theatre programs.

There is no direct connection whatsoever between the lineage of the various NBC and CBS incarnations of Mystery Theatre and ABC's completely different and separate Mystery Theater; the network, sponsor, cast, technicians and recurring characters were all completely different. However, it may be useful to describe the essential details of ABC's Mystery Theater to dispel any lingering ambiguities as to it's lineage.

ABC Mystery Theater [not Theatre] ran from October 3, 1951 to July 1, 1953. It's initial run of 37 episodes starred Robert Carroll as Inspector Mark Saber. It broke for the Summer of 1953 on June 11, then resumed on October 8, 1952 with a different cast. Veteran Radio actor Les Damon became Inspector Mark Saber and Walter Burke became Saber's right hand, Sergeant Tim Maloney. Clearly positioning itself in direct competition with CBS' Inspector Hearthstone of The Death Squad, ABC's rendition of the genre was more grounded in American big city homicide. It's production values were somewhat better than the deteriorating scripts and engineering of Hearthstone of The Death Squad, but both series were somewhat lackluster compared to their Television competition. And neither series ever captured the superb writing, voice talent, engineering and production values of NBC's Mystery Theatre series.

43-12-28 17 Homicide for Hannah by Dwight B. Babcock is not listed anywhere as airing on December 28, 1943. Every newspaper listing a title for the 43-12-28 airing shows the title as The Mystery of the Seven Keys. It is our surmise that Homicide for Hannah, intended to be the first Molle' Mystery Theatre to air over NBC never actually aired. If it did air, it would have to have aired on December 21, 1943, because at the end of the Homicide for Hannah program Geoffrey Barnes announces The Mystery of The Seven Keys as the following Molle' Mystery Theatre program. But as contemporaneous radio listings demonstrate, Stalk The Hunter is the Mystery Theatre program that aired on December 21, 1943. There are two other possible answers to these contradictory provenances.

  • Homicide for Hannah did, in fact air on December 21, 1943, but the newspapers didn't update their information in time.
  • Homicide for Hannah was intended to air on December 21, 1943, but wasn't ready by the time it was to have been broadcast.

The Dain Curse," Dashiell Hammett's unusual tale of a small-time robbery which leads to big-time murder, will be presented by the Mystery Theater on Tuesday, May 16. at 9:00 p. m., EWT, over NBC.
A typical product of, the hardboiled school of whodunits originated
by Hamrnett, the story will feature Private Detective Jim Diamond, who uses most unorthodox methods to achieve his results.

Camera-shy Geoffrey Barnes, 'Connoisseur of Detective Mysteries', ca. 1943

Geoffrey Barnes on the cover of Radio Vision magazine

Edward Gorey panel from 1952

1803's La Danse Macabre from woodcut.
Attempting to describe Geoffrey Barnes is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. It's hard to know where to even begin. A child prodigy in multiple disciplines, young Master Barnes was publishing his own poetry by the age of 8. He'd become an expert on both the pistol range and the skeet range by the age of 10. Many felt he might very well become the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic Pentathalon team by the time he was 16. By the age of 14, young Barnes had already amassed an impressive collection of the early works of contemporary American artists of the day--all with a distinctly macabre uniting theme.

But it was during his adolescent years that Geoffrey Barnes took an avid interest in Crime--all forms of crime. He devoured crime novels at the rate of four to five a week. He acquired subscriptions to every available crime magazine. Indeed, by the age of 13, Geoffrey Barnes was submitting his own crime stories to many of the popular crime pulps of the day. He was first published in 1925 at the age of 15. In the ten years that followed, Geoffrey Barnes was publishing as many as twenty to thirty crime stories a year under a dizzying array of pseudonyms.

He spent the proceeds from his published stories and poetry to fund his own extensive crime laboratory. But this was a crime laboratory worthy of any forensic lab in the U.S. for its time. Indeed, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover visited with Barnes whenever he was in New York to assess Barnes' latest additions to his laboratory.

A noted Voice Coach, Geoffrey Barnes is reputed to have coached many of Radio's most successful crime genre voices. At Barnes' request the names of these performers have remained a secret for over 50 years.

Also notable--but not the least surprising-- Barnes frequently consulted with Senate members, Congressmen, and as many as six Presidents before Barnes' passing in 1997. Indeed, Barnes was reportedly penning the last chapters of a tell-all memoir the night before he passed (of surprisingly natural causes).

One of the most gifted criminologists of the 20th Century, Barnes' reputation seems to have drifted into anonymity of late, but for tens of thousands of Golden Age Radio crime genre fans, Geoffrey Barnes remains one of the great Radio crime annotators of history.

Bernard Lenrow, ca. 1947

1957's The Violators, Bernard Lenrow's last Film credit

Although Actor Bernard Lenrow had his first NBC audition in 1928, it was the fan mail he received while broadcasting occasionally in connection with his College teaching eight years later that made him decide to go into Radio. Lenrow was born in Binghamton. N. Y., and educated at Cornell where he also did graduate study in Speech and Dramatics. He became an instructor in the University's Department of Public Speaking and Assistant Director of the Cornell Dramatic Club. He later taught Speech at Hunter College in New York, and at the U. of Iowa, where he also directed the Iowa State Players.

His Radio debut in a commercial spot was a success, and he was busy from that time on as free-lance actor and narrator-announcer. He was narrator at The City of Light at the New York World's Fair, and had done the narration for such film documentaries as "Men Against Microbes." Tall and powerfully-built, red-haired Lenrow kept busy with gardening and carpentry at his Englewood, N. J., home. An ardent cyclist, he taught his three young sons equal proficiency in long-distance cycling.

Lenrow's Radio work wasn't confined to narration or announcing chores. Lenrow performed in several straight drama roles over his 32-year career in Radio. He had recurring roles in Perry Mason (1944), Mystery Theatre (1945), and Casey Crime Photographer (1946). Indeed, Lenrow's most memorable role in Radio was as Detective Captain Logan on Casey, Crime Photograper. Lenrow often appeared as authoritarian figures such as doctors, judges, lawyers or senior detectives.

Not long after his debut in Radio, Lenrow found himself peforming in several New York Stage plays, among them, Ten Million Ghosts (1936), The Man with Blonde Hair (1941), Compulsion (1957) and The Gang's All Here (1959). Lenrow also performed in the Stratford, CT Shakespearan Festival for several years, beginning in 1955.

Lenrow's Film debut was in an uncredited role in 1945's The House On 92nd Street. Lenrow's last Film appearance was in 1957's The Violators, as Judge McKenna. Bernard Lenrow also peformed in several early Television programs, among them, Tales of Tomorrow (1951), Decoy (1959) and The Defenders (1963). Bernard Lenrow passed away shortly after his last performance in The Defenders of a sudden, unexpected heart-attack while hospitalized in an Englewood hospital.

Dan Seymour, ca. 1955

As difficult as it might be to imagine, Announcer Dan Seymour's extraordinary Radio career--at least 2,000 appearances in over 100 Radio programs--as a CBS Network voice talent pales in the face of his career as an Advertising Executive.

After graduating from Amherst College in 1935, Seymour began his career as a radio announcer. A year later, he joined the Columbia Broadcasting System in New York. Seymour's deep, mellow voice, soon found him announcing and emceeing hundreds of radio programs that ran throughout the Golden Age of Radio.

His memorable contribution to 1938's The War of the Worlds was as the regular announcer of The Mercury Theater on the Air. Orson Welles’ 1938 broadcast of The War of the Worlds terrified listeners to the point of nationwide panic with realistic bulletins on Martian invaders. Seymour was also the announcer for the human interest Radio and Television programs, We the People and served as announcer and emcee of Radio staples Duffy’s Tavern, The Aldrich Family, The Benny Goodman Show and the Camel Caravan Swing School.

Throughout his years with the Columbia Broadcasting System, Seymour began taking a more and more hands-on interest in the business side of Radio. Radio Advertising, in particular, became his passion--first at CBS then as a fledgling Advertising Executive with Young & Rubicam in 1950. A brilliant communicator, Seymour's exceptional communication skills, market insight, and vision equipped him well to suceed in the often brutal world of Radio and Television Advertising.

In 1955 Dan Seymour was hired away from Young & Rubicam, where he had been head of radio-television programming and production, to re-organize J. Walter Thompson's broadcasting operations into a combined Radio-Television Department. The resulting department was responsible for managing client accounts, development of television shows and other aspects of television programming, and actor selection and audience profiling.

From a Time Magazine article, June 23, 1967:

"In its 104 years of existence, J. Walter Thompson Co., the world's largest advertising agency, has had exactly three chief executives—J. Walter Thompson, Stanley Resor and Norman H. Strouse. Last week Thompson's board of directors elected a fourth. Succeeding him as boss of the biggest: broad-shouldered Dan Seymour, 53, who has been JWT's president for the past three years.

Seymour's election was noteworthy in another sense. Traditionally, ad-agency heads have come, as did Strouse, from the ranks of account executives. But Seymour emerged from the world of radio-TV, and had already had a successful 15-year career as performer, producer and director before he switched. He began as a radio announcer in Boston after graduation from Amherst ('35), soon moved to New York and network broadcasting. Seymour was the announcer who, in Orson Welles's famous 1938 radio drama, "War of the Worlds," terrified listeners with realistic bulletins on Martian invaders. Until World War II, he was the Danny who used to visit soap opera's Aunt Jenny to listen to her sudsy tales of goodness. He was also the producer and M.C. of We the People, produced the wartime radio series Now It Can Be Told; when television arrived, he and We the People went video.

In 1950, he went over to Madison Avenue. For five years he was with Young & Rubicam, selecting shows to suit the sponsors. In 1955 he moved to Thompson, which, in spite of its size, had been slow getting into the enormous new field of TV. Seymour reorganized the radio-TV department, was the agency's show shopper. He did so well that he soon had a hand in all of the agency's activities. Thus, after Stanley Resor died and Strouse was left alone to run the shop, Seymour was a natural choice for president.

"I suppose," says Seymour of his rise and latest honor, that "my being chosen is a reflection of the change in the advertising business. With radio and television becoming so important, there is a greater chance for people experienced in these fields to rise to the top." Seymour's top is a pretty lofty place. J. Walter Thompson has worldwide billings of $558 million, and its list of clients reads like a blue book: Ford Motors, Liggett & Myers, RCA, Pan American, Eastman Kodak, Irving Trust Co., Scott Paper, Kraft Foods.

Many of Thompson's clients have gone or are going global, and J. Walter Thompson is globe-girdling with them. The agency has offices in 26 countries, gets 36% of its billings from abroad. But overseas advertising has a still greater potential and one Seymour assignment will be to realize it. Another task is as old as the business, and Seymour states it simply: "To make sure that our advertising sells goods."

At the time of his death, Seymour was serving as a director of several companies, including American Express.
