Background

Phillips H. Lord and his Lord, Incorporated, quickly became a Radio legend from the 1930s, onward. One of Radio's first successful producer - syndicators, Lord brought numerous long-running Radio features to the air throughout the Golden Age of Radio:

1929-1939 Sunday Evening at Seth Parker's
1932-1933 Country Doctor
1935-1957 Gang Busters
1936-1951 We, The People
1939-1940 The Sky Blazers
1939-1953 Mr. District Attorney
1942-1957 David Harding - Counterspy
1958 Treasury Agent

At one point in the late 1940s Phillips Lord had eighteen featured series' simultaneously airing over three networks. Much in the mold of Frederick Ziv, Himan Brown and the Hummerts, Phillips H. Lord aggressively pursued every element of his productions, maintaining both a firm hand and personal vision for each of his productions. Lord maintained control of his programs until 1950, when he sold his existing programming packages to CBS for a reported $800,000.

Lord premieres David Harding - Counterspy over NBC-Blue

David Harding - Counterspy was a natural progression for Phillips Lord--an amalgam of Lord's hard-hitting crime dramas, Gang Busters and Mr. District Attorney, and his long-running, patriotic series, We, The People. It also tapped into the nation's growing interest in the foreign intrigue surrounding World War II and its aftermath. The program premiered over New York station WJZ on May 18, 1942.

Initially airing sustained over NBC-Blue's flagship station, WEAF, the program found its first sponsor by September 1942 in the form of Mail Pouch Tobacco Company, makers of chewing and smoking tobacco. The initial broadcasts were performed and recorded before a live audience, originating from WJZ, New York. A beneficiary--or victim--of the breakup of the National Broadcasting Company, the production soon transitioned to The Blue Network, then The Blue Network "A", then ultimately the American Broadcasting Company. The Blue Network's flagship station, WJZ, became the originating studio for the series until its move back to NBC in November 1950.

The build-up to the program's debut created quite a buzz. From the May 18, 1942-05-18 edition of the Capital Times:

Phillips Lord's Espionage Drama
Makes Debut Over WIBA Tonight

 'Counter-Spy' Is a Tale
Of Thrilling Intrigue
      By E. BOWDEN CURTISS
(Radio Editor)

THE fascinating story of the battle of wits behind the firing lines of war will be told in a new dramatic series, "Counter-Spy," which will make its debut tonight at 9 over Station WIBA.
Produced by Phillips H. Lord, the new espionage drama will be heard each Monday evening.
Spy stories will center about David Harding, daring young American, who holds a "cover-all commission" from the United States government.  Through this special commission, Harding is permitted to be his own boss, to work wherever and however he wishes, and to co-operate with other government departments as the case comes within their jurisdiction.  In this counter-spy assignment, Harding works mainly against professional enemy spies in this country.
The technique of counter espionage is not new to Phillips Lord, producer of the program.  For almost four years Lord served in a confidential but official capacity in secret intelligence work, remaining in the United States service until he had fulfilled his mission.

From the May 24, 1942 edition of the Capital Times:

Counter Spy Program Uses True Devices

Open season on radio skeptics, if they call espionage methods in the new "Counter-Spy" series fantastic, will be declared by Phillips H. Lord, producer of the program.  The series is heard Mondays at 9 p.m. over station WIBA.
According to Lord, the devices used in his series will be as real as those successfully tried by authentic master-spies.  Thoroughly schooled in his subject, Lord says some of the up-to-date methods of spying and counter-spying include:
"Sending secret messages under a postage stamp; placing a time-bomb, the size and color of a lump of bunker coal, in the hold of a ship; sending a secret message from New York to London in the blouse of a ferry bomber pilot; using a Chinese laundry, and the inoculation of live stock with disease germs to create epidemics.
"The average American," Lord claims, "has developed a world-wide reputation as an easy victim of organized espionage.  Fortunately, our expert spy-trappers are not so easy to fool.

The show was at the top of the list among programs that had developed the technique of sound effects to a fine art. Each program was written with the sound in mind, not so much sound for sound's sake, but to advance the plot, add color or create atmosphere. Two sound effects men spent a reported ten hours in rehearsal for each broadcast, in addition to the time spent by the actors.

Wisconsin State Journal article from July 20 1942
Wisconsin State Journal article from July 20 1942

East coast actors House Jameson, Don MacLaughlin, Phil Sterling and Lawson Zerbe [MBS] (Zerbe appeared as both David Harding and Harry Peters) were the only four actors to ever assume the role of David Harding--Jameson for the first two episodes only, replaced by Don MacLaughlin for the remainder of its twelve year run. Both Connecticut residents, House Jameson premiered in the role while Lord was still auditioning talent for the lead. By the third episode, Phillips H. Lord selected Don MacLaughlin for the role. MacLaughlin was by no means new to Radio, having already appeared in some 300 Radio productions since his debut over Radio in 1935. MacLaughlin's versatility, predominantly in action and straight dramatic roles, made him an ideal candidate among the twenty or so actors who auditioned for the part. The selection proved a prudent one for both Lord and MacLaughlin.

MacLaughlin portrayed David Harding, the ostensible head of the 'United States Counterspies' unit of the federal government. As the Chief Counterspy for the imaginary agency, all reports of suspicious espionage activity were funneled to him, providing the wealth of plots and intrigues which kept the series fresh for some 500+ scripts throughout its run. David Harding's right hand in the series was Harry Peters, a special agent for the unit, portrayed by durable character actor, Mandel Kramer, later famous over Radio for his stint as Johnny Dollar of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.

Phillips H. Lord's 'vision' for the program hoped to capitalize on the surge of patriotism and security awareness following the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 which marked the United States' official entry into World War II. According to the promotional teasers in newspapers of the era, Lord had reportedly served in an official, yet highly confidential, capacity performing intelligence work for the government as early as 1938. Whether apocryphal or anecdotal the claim is not that far-fetched. Prior to his work in Radio, Phillips H. Lord had been something of an international adventurer himself. Lord's Gang Busters series had provided him even more entre to all manner of law enforcement, F.B.I. and intelligence functionaries throughout the U.S.. Indeed, the wealth of material Lord's had accumulated during the Gang Busters run proved to be a rich source of script plots for David Harding, Counter-Spy.

True to the Lord's track record with Gang Busters, the scripts and taut, fast-paced timing for David Harding, Counter-Spy made for compelling Radio from the program's premiere. Exposition, where necessary to advance the plot, was generally dramatized, rather than 'voice-overed' as was the growing trend of the mystery and intrigue dramas of the era. The election to dramatize even the most elaborate expositional elements of the script kept the listener engaged, while at the same time providing work for as many as twelve actors in many of the scripts.

The War effort provided the backdrop to the vast majority of the scripts from 1942 through 1947. During the post-War years, the scripts evolved treatments such as scams against ex-G.I.s, black marketing, counterfeiting, Cold War foreign intrigue, and domestic espionage activities. By 1952 it became apparent to the production company that the premise for the series had pretty much run its course. The Man Called 'X' (1944-1952) suffered a similar fate at about the same time. Dangerous Assignment (1949-1953), the late-comer to the genre, lingered on till 1953.

To everyone who knows him, Phillips H. Lord is a patriotic American, but to one woman in Lincoln, he is a bottleneck in this country's war effort. The woman, avid listener to the "Counter Spy" network series which Lord produces, objects to the way David Harding, the program's central character, abuses the tires on his car. According to a letter the Lincoln fan writes to this column: Harding is taking advantage of his position as "chief U.S. counter spy." Even when he is not chasing spies, he takes his car around corners so fast you can hear the tires squeal, and when he stops the car you can almost smell the tires burning." In answering, Phillips Lord might explain tht the sound of squealing tires on the program consists of a recording used by the sound effects man.

Religion: Saintly Picnic

In appearance, Jonesport, Maine is like any Yankee village. But tourists are aware of Jonesport long before they arrive there. As far away as 250 mi. signs advertise it as "The Home of Seth Parker." Throughout the land, a great mass of radio-listeners—devout, folksy, home-loving— know Seth Parker and his neighbors as well as if they were real people and not radio-performers employed by National Broadcasting Co. From the comparative obscurity of a provincial broadcasting station three years ago, Seth Parker has become—by means of a weekly nation-wide hookup, a published hymnal, many a magazine article, a cinema entertainment and a cross-country tour—one of the leading U. S. exponents of homely piety.

Everybody—Everywhere. "Seth Parker," composite of many an authentic Down East character, was conceived by Phillips Haynes Lord, 29. Graduate of Bowdoin College in 1925, Mr. Lord wrote unsuccessful short stories, then a radio sketch about rural life in Maine. Success came when he got a radio station in Hartford, Conn, to try out a scene in an old-time singing school, with "Seth Parker" as central figure. National Broadcasting Co. heard of it, signed up Author Lord. Dubious when he began to deepen the religious flavor of his skit, N. B. C. soon discovered it had a treasure. Until the program was temporarily taken off last month, 3,510,000 people were estimated to listen in every Sunday night on "Sunday at Seth Parker's." Mr. Lord is smooth-faced, suave, lively. As Seth Parker, he puts on a white wig and false beard, drawls genially and devoutly, becomes a skinny, saintly Yankee sage. He delivers a little sermon, pointed up with earthy rural witticisms. Leading members of his cast of ten singer-actors are "Ma" Parker, Capt. Bang (famed for his rendition of "Crossing the Bar"). Lizzie Peters, a comic spinster (played by Mrs. Sophia Mecorney Lord, mother of two), and Cefus, Lizzie's half-witted brother. To the accompaniment of an antique melodeon, Seth and his neighbors sing hymns. Titles suggest the neighborly, revivalistic tone: "You Go To Your Church and I'll Go To Mine" (a prime favorite); "Sailing With My Father"; "We Are Gathering With The Lord Today"; "Jesus Is My Neighbor."

Slice of Sweetness. That Phillips Lord's program is an adroit combination of tasteful humor and genuine piety, few observers have denied. Proof of its genuineness appeared when Seth Parker and his troupe went touring—from Buffalo early last month, continuing in Colorado. Utah, Oregon and California last week. Everywhere, audiences seem to represent a class which could not be won by smart, theatrical revivalism. To city theatres, churches, convention halls go elderly, placid people, some blind, some lame or halt, who might not have gone out since the last Chautauqua or travelog in the church basement. They see "Seth Parker and his Jonesport Neighbors" performed with no "props" save a fireplace, chairs and the melodeon. Of plot the entertainment has little; to get the actors off stage for intermission it is necessary to pretend they are all going out for supper. The acting is unpretentious, the comedy naive, such as when Seth gets his foot tangled in a carpet while beating time to music.

Hardboiled Variety has called it "a saintly picnic, a slice of sweetness, a glorification of the humble and the familiar." Fortuitous though his creation was, Seth Parker has gained a radio following greater even than that of august Dr. Samuel Parkes Cadman. Says the preface to his hymnal: "Seth Parker believes that religion is tangible; that it is a kind word, a thoughtful deed and is not something apart from every day life. He has probably done more to make religion a part of the American home than has any other one man."

From the October 1938 edition of Radio Stars magazine:

PHILLIPS LORD:

As an example of versatility, wholly in the field of radio, Phillips Lord, as actor, director, writer and producer of consistently successful programs of widely differing types, rates as an unusual personality.

His Seth Parker, one of the first widely successful radio characters of the "homely" type, started back in 1928, and remained on the air, altogether, some seven years. Lord played the title role, in addition to writing, directing and producing the program, and Mrs. Lord played one of the characters.

Next, he produced Uncle Abe and David and when the Hearst papers ran a radio popularity contest at that time, Amos 'n' Andy took first place, Seth Parker second and Uncle Abe and David third, giving Lord two out of three places in the entire radio field.

Next came the Stebbins Boys and then the Country Doctor, both in the same "homely" school of script show, neither of which enjoyed the vogue of his earlier serials. But when he returned from the cruise of the Seth Parker he created an entirely new type of program, G-Men, followed by Gang Busters, which has so far seen its third highly successful year. And while Gang Busters, with its real-life melodramatic thrills was running, Mr. Lord created a still different and also successful show in We, The People, returning to the air this fall after three years.

Unlike many successful actor-directors in radio, Phillips Lord went directly into radio writing and acting from a high-school principalship. His wife, the former Sophia McCorney, was also a teacher. And with nothing behind him but his Bowdoin College degree and a teacher's experience,Phillips Lord developed his own showmanship on the air.

1200 ON YOUR DIAL

SOME people plan on radio as a career—others just land in it' accidentally—and Don MacLaughlin, well-known radio actor, belongs in the latter group.  Don has recently taken over the role of Michael west in "A Woman's Life," written by Kathleen, Norris, and heard Mondays through Fridays at 10:30 p. m., over KGLO-CBS.
Literally a rolling stone until the time he made his first break into radio 10 years ago, Don's wanderings started from the time he was still in knee pants, when his family moved from Webster, Ohio—a town which boasted a population of 175! Grammar and high school days were spent in Riverside, Iowa; Hedrick, Ohio, and even a small town in Arkansas.
Don's acting started semi-professionally at Iowa Wesleyan college.  He and a friend organized a traveling company which toured the neighboring towns.  Don playing both leading man, director and stage hand. Unable to finish college because of hard times, Don moved to Chicago, working as time keeper in an electrical plant during the day and attending school at night.
Still interested in acting, he joined a western summer stock company.  His hopes were frustrated, however, when the director fired him, saying that he would never become an actor.  Don contemplated drowning himself, but gave up the idea when he discovered the river was only one foot deep!  Instead of acting he was offered the job of "tentman," traveling with the company throughout the west and putting up props, scenery and tents.  Don claims the experience was "corny, but wonderful," and that he literally learned the acting business from the ground up!
Soon after this, Don met his future wife who convinced him to try radio acting.  That was in 1934, and since then, Don's star has been rising rapidly.  Selected from scores of applicants to play David Harding in "Counterspy," Don has held that leading role for 3 years.  Not always on the right side of the law, however, Don has played villains and gangsters galore, and is in constant demand for all kinds of radio assignments.  He lives in Darien, Conn., and is the father of 3 children: Douglas 6, Janet 3, and Brett, 9 months old.
As Michael West in "A Woman's Life," Don brings the heartwarming story of his life with Carol West, into the homes of a large and loyal radio audience.  His characterization is destined to touch the hearts of all who hear it.

From the June 3, 1986 edition of the Ironwood Daily Globe (Ironwood MI):

The next year, he appeared in the original pilot for "As The World Turns," and was a member of the original cast when it premiered as television's first half-hour daily drama in 1956.

SOAP OPERA WEEK

By Kimberly Redmond
Whatever happened to Don MacLaughlin, the actor who portrayed Chris Hughes on "As the World Turns"?  I haven't seen him in months.--H.C., Mesquite, Texas      I'm sad to report that MacLaughlin, who was an original member of the CBS soap's cast, died of liver disease on May 28 of this year.  MacLaughlin, who was 79 at the time of his death, had been appearing periodically on the soap and was on hand to help celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 2.  During the week of July 7, "ATWT" paid tribute to MacLaughlin by airing a special show in which the entire cast mourned his character's death.
