Background

The nom de plume 'Ellery Queen' belonged to David Nathan [Frederic Dannay] and Manford (Emanuel) Lepofsky [Manfred Bennington Lee], two young cousins from Brooklyn, New York who, during late 1920s forward, embarked on a fiction writing career spanning over 40 years together. Also collaborating under the pen name 'Barnaby Ross,' the duo launched four novels with detective, 'Drury Lane,' as their protagonist. But its their remarkable Ellery Queen franchise that most captured the imagination of loyal detective fiction fans of the era.

The pair authored their first Ellery Queen mystery novel, The Roman Hat Mystery, in 1929. They collaborated on twenty-five other Ellery Queen novels and novellas between 1930 and 1958. With each new novel, Ellery Queen's fans increased almost exponentially. Ellery Queen's popularity caught the attention of the Film Industry beginning with an adaptation of their ninth novel, The Spanish Cape Mystery, for Republic Pictures in 1935. The Spanish Cape Mystery starred Donald Cook as Ellery Queen and Guy Usher as Inspector Queen. Thereafter, the Ellery Queen franchise resulted in eight more Ellery Queen films of the era:

  • 1936 The Mandarin Mystery [with Eddie Quillan]
  • 1940 Ellery Queen, Master Detective [with Ralph Bellamy]
  • 1941 Ellery Queen's Penthouse Mystery [with Ralph Bellamy]
  • 1941 Ellery Queen and the Perfect Crime [with Ralph Bellamy]
  • 1941 Ellery Queen and the Murder Ring [with Ralph Bellamy]
  • 1942 A Close Call for Ellery Queen [with William Gargan]
  • 1942 A Desperate Chance for Ellery Queen [with William Gargan]
  • 1942 Enemy Agents Meet Ellery Queen [with William Gargan]

The first two Ellery Queen films were as much slapstick as detective mystery. 1936's The Mandarin Mystery was adapted from Ellery Queen's eighth novel, The Chinese Orange Mystery (1934). The 'Nikki Porter' character first entered the Film canon with 1940's Ellery Queen, Master Detective, starring Ralph Bellamy as Ellery Queen and Margaret Lindsay as Nikki Porter. The Ellery Queen films starring Ralph Bellamy, and then William Gargan, took on more of the flavor of the popular 'female sidekick' detective films of the era--more so in the Ralph Bellamy vehicles, less so in the William Gargan vehicles.

As the Ellery Queen franchise continued to grow even more popular, it understandably caught the attention of both Radio and Television networks as well.

An Era of Mystery Quizzes over Radio

Mystery dramas were highly popular air fare throughout the Golden Age of Radio. Literally hundreds of mystery programs of one form or another filled the airwaves from morning to night. The great appeal of such mystery dramas was figuring them out--preferably well before the actual dénouement, or at the least by the time all the clues were provided.

Nudging audience involvement one step further, some of the more clever mystery programs of the era either encouraged the listening audiences to participate in solving the mystery or crime of the evening or had their listening audiences compete with members of the in-studio audiences to solve the mystery or crime.

Some of the more popular and compelling audience participation mystery or crime programs of the era were:

  • 1937 Phyl Coe Radio Mysteries
  • 1938 Night Cap Yarns
  • 1939 Armchair Adventures
  • 1939 The Adventures of Ellery Queen
  • 1940 What Would You Have Done?
  • 1941 Who–Dun–It?
  • 1943 Let’s Play Reporter
  • 1944 Kelly’s Courthouse
  • 1944 Quick as a Flash
  • 1944 Stop That Villain!
  • 1945 Calling All Detectives
  • 1945 Detect and Collect
  • 1945 Murder Will Out!
  • 1965 Ellery Queen Minute Mysteries

While only a representative sampling, the above exemplars provide a cross section of the type of programming that captured the imagination of armchair sleuths of the era--both at home and in the studio. It's easy to understand why so many of these programs were popular. Everyone listening to a radio mystery gets caught up to one degree or another with the details of the unfolding mystery or crime. And to one degree or another, most listeners formed quite well-supported theories regarding the unraveling of such mysteries by the actual point of dénouement. If the listeners felt the solution or resolution was presented fairly, then whether or not they actually solved it themselves, they didn't feel in any way cheated by the actual resolution. And of course that was the fine line all mystery script writers were tasked with throughout the era, whether the program was specifically targeted to audience participation or not.

Audience participation mystery programs of the era also lent themselves to a degree of audience manipulation. The natural temptation by sponsors or networks to milk a particularly popular audience participation mystery vehicle often led to gambits such as providing the resolution of the night's mystery the following night--or week, depending on its scheduling. This was a way to ensure that listeners felt compelled to return to hear the next installment. If that proved too intrusive or manipulative, sponsors would tie prizes, premiums, or awards of one type or another to the successful solution to a particular program episode or series of episodes. Juvenile mystery programs of the era often proved a great success employing such tactics.

Mystery quiz programs provided almost all of the elements of a successful audience participation mystery format. Listeners had the option of solving the mystery themselves or seeing if they could beat the 'official' quiz participants at solving the night's mystery. In some instances, they might even find themselves competing against both quiz contestants selected from the studio's audience and/or Radio and Film actors or other prominent luminaries of the era.

Both types of audience participation mystery programs were also depicted in mystery films of the era. Whether an extension of a popular series of mystery books or emulating one or more of the popular mystery quiz programs over Radio, such films provided the same level of audience satisfaction in providing a means to compete for the most accurate resolution of the underlying crime or mystery.

Needless to say, such audience participation dramas, whether over Radio or in Film succeeded or failed based on the integrity of the trail of clues presented to their respective audiences right up until the dénouement itself.

CBS Radio introduces Ellery Queen to America's armchair detectives

The Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) was the first Radio network to bring Ellery Queen to a Radio audience on a recurring basis. Though still clouded in secrecy as to the true identities of either/both the creator, Ellery Queen or the actor portraying Ellery Queen, both details remaind shrouded in secrecy until the last episodes of that first CBS run of sixty-seven, CBS-produced mystery quizzes. That first series premiered in an hour-long format on the Sunday evening of June 18, 1939.

From the June 17, 1939 edition of the Mason City Globe-Gazette:

Best-Seller Mysteries on
KGLO Sunday Nights

Listeners Invited to Help
Solve Baffling Crime Hits

Adventure Series to Be Heard Via CBS
From 6 to 7 O'Clock Weekly

Armchair detectives who have been trying for 10 years to beat best-seller Ellery Queen in the solution of more than a score of baffling fictional mysteries, will come into their own Sunday.

Beginning on that date and each Sunday thereafter, "The Adventures of Ellery Queen," presenting in action the gentleman detective and Nikki, his secretary-assistant, will join Columbia networks parade of feature programs.

          On Air From 6 to 7 P.M.
KGLO will carry the new network mystery from 6 to 7 o'clock Sunday evening.  The P.G. and E. News of the Nation program, regularly heard at 6 p.m., will be heard at 5:45 on this day only and Jim Woods' Tydol-Veedol Sports Camera will be heard at 7 p.m. on Sunday, 45 minutes later than usual.
Four armchair detectives will be invited each week to participate in the studio solution.
Queen's first CBS assignment will involve "The Gum-Chewing Millionaire," according to George Zachary, producing and directing the series of which he is the originator.
          Offer Personal Solutions
In explanation of the program format, Zachary said, "After the guests are introduced, the mystery gets under way.  As soon as Queen knows who the murderer is, he halts dramatic action and invites each armchair detective in the studio to reveal a personal solution of the crime.  When all opinions are expressed, the drama is resumed--and the correct solution played off."
By intermission, Zachary points out, the audience as well as studio guests possess all clues and information necessary to the mystery's solution.  If a clue is not followed in the drama, he warns listeners not to follow that clue in their own minds.
There can be but one solution to each adventure.  That solution is based neither on guesswork nor on motive, but logic.  Anyone can hazard a guess as to the criminal.  That is not enough.  By elimination anyone can pin a motive on a suspect.
Samuel S. Leibowitz, famous criminal lawyer, listed five basic motives for murder.  They may be jealousy, greed--which includes envy, revenge, love, which prompts mercy-slayings, and adventure, in which human beings kill merely for a new thrill, a case in point being that of Loeb and Leopold.
Therefore, says Zachary, there is not merit in selecting the criminal by motive.  To obtain a criminal's conviction, the detective must base his accusation on factual evidence.
          Characters Named
Permanent characters of the new CBS mystery series include Ellery Queen and Nikki Porter, Santos Ortego playing Inspector Richard Queen, head of New York homicide squad and father of the gentleman detective; Howard Smith as Sergeant Velie, and Arthur Allen as Dr. Samuel Prouty, assistant medical examiner of New York county.
Ellery Queen, during the past decade has solved such fictional cases as "The Roman Hat Mystery," "The French Powder Mystery," "The Dutch Shoe Mystery," "The Greek Coffin Mystery," "The Chinese Orange Mystery" and "The Spanish Cape Mystery."

The CBS-produced 1939-1940 run starred Hugh Marlowe as Ellery Queen, Marian Shockley as Nikki Porter, Santos Ortega as Ellery's father, Inspector Queen, and first Howard Smith, then gravel-voiced Ted De Corsia as Detective Sergeant Velie. Note also that it was the Radio Adventures of Ellery Queen that inspired the characters of 'Nikki Porter' and 'Detective Sergeant Velie,' both characters finding their way into the Ellery Queen films that succeeded the Radio program from that point forward.

Originated, produced and directed by George Zachary, the format of the hour-long mystery quiz retained essentially the same format over the following nine years of its respective runs, varying only in program length and number of 'armchair detectives':

  • The announcer would introduce the program and/or sponsor messages
  • The guest 'armchair detectives' would be introduced and the title of the night's mystery would be given.
  • The dramatized mystery would be presented to its conclusion.
  • The armchair detective(s) would make their case for the mystery's solution.
  • Ellery Queen would announce the actual resolution.
  • The announcer and Ellery Queen would provide the closing sponsor message, tease and announce the title of the next week's mystery, and close with the credits.

Inaugurated in an hour-long format with a panel of at least four guest armchair detectives, the CBS series was shortened to an half-hour format beginning with Episode No. 37, The Adventure of the Old Soldiers, of February 25th, 1940. The series retained the half-hour format over all of the remaining Radio broadcasts for the following eight years. The half-hour format necessarily reduced most succeeding mystery quizzes to either one or two armchair detectives. Later productions even experimented with talking to their guest armchair detectives via long-distance telephone

The introduction of celebrity guest armchair detectives into the mystery quiz format was an obviously brilliant production strategy. On the one hand, it added another dimension of cache to the series'. On the other, it virtually guaranteed an continuing stream of 'ink' regarding the broadcasts in the trades papers and newspapers of the era. As a consequence of that unprecedented publicity, this is one of the few long-running Radio series' of the era to provide an almost complete record of either titles, synopses, or guest celebrities in the Radio listings columns of most of the newspapers.

Throughout the course of the series an estimated 750+ celebrity armchair guests--great and small--contributed to the growing popularity of the Radio franchise. As the series' grew more popular over the years, the demands by aspiring guest detectives grew so great that the guests' agents were standing in line to get their clients on the program. Witness this excerpt from the December 19, 1942 edition of The Billboard magazine:

. . . In some cases an agent's entire list of performers eventually ask to get on "prestige" shows like Information, Please as guest experts, on Ellery Queen as guest armchair detectives, on Battle of the Sexes as guest stooges, on Take It or Leave It as guest ringers. They'll be a guest on anything as long as it's before a mike. It's getting so that the shows themselves are becoming tougher and tougher to crash because many name-guests experts have turned out to be just guest dopes.

George Zachary was, among his myriad other production talents, a brilliant publicist for the series. As indicated in the sidebar (left), photo teasers arrived in abundance throughout the initial CBS launch of the series. But again, even though actress Marian Shockley (Nikki Porter) was prominently identified during the first two years of promoting the series, Hugh Marlowe, though clearly visible in the photo promotions for the campaign, remained cleverly unidentified as the voice of Ellery Queen. That gambit continued for the remainder of the various runs of the canon irrespective of the network or sponsor.

That quite intentional ambiguity regarding both the name of the two original authors of the franchise and the five actors who portrayed their sleuth on air continued to contribute to the mystery and mystique of the series throughout the canon. As indicated above, the true identity of Hugh Marlowe as Ellery Queen was only disclosed after the initial CBS run had all but ended, while Marian Shockley as Nikki, Santos Ortega as Inspector Queen and Ted De Corsia as Sergeant Velie were regularly promoted throughout the CBS run. The subsequent 'Ellery Queens'--Carleton Young, Sydney Smith, Larry Dobkin and Howard Culver--suffered the same quite deliberate slight throughout all subsequent broadcasts of the canon. The gambit was, in all likelihood, by way of offering both sponsors and audience a monolithic 'image' of Ellery Queen as both the author/originator of the various series' as well as the protagonist in virtually all of the Adventures of Ellery Queen mystery-quiz broadcasts.

By the time the National Broacasting Company (NBC) took over the series, a great number of "spine chillers, homicidery, and bloody epics" had emerged to promote the food and drugs of the era, as observed by the following article by Marion Radcliffe, "Walk Into My Parlor" from the February 20, 1943 edition of The Billboard:

The Billboard Nerve-Wracking Nineteen from 43-02-20

NEW YORK, Feb. 13,--It takes a total of 19 network shows a week, comprising 9 1/2 hours of air time, to chill the spine of the nation, with 13 sponsors taking advantage of the listeners' state of helpless horror to try to sell them 10 different kinds of food and drugs, two brands of tobacco and one brand of coal.  The nerve-racking 19 run the gamut from the cops-and-robbers roughhouse of Gang Busters and Bulldog Drummond to the sophisticated sleuthing of Thin Man and the subtle terror of Inner Sanctum and Lights Out.  The cowboy-and-Indian, cops-and-robbers dramas, which have been making kids and grownups alike shriek and shiver since almost the beginnings of radio, are slanted toward the war now, keeping Green Hornet and The Shadow pretty busy tracking down vicious Nazi spies and saboteurs.  Counter-Spy, which debuted over CBS in May, 1942, devotes itself entirely to the adventures in espionage of an American secret agent.   Almost all the mystery shows inject the war angle into their scripts, with black markets, for instance, serving as a subject for investigation on recent programs of both Mr. District Attorney and Crime Doctor.  OWI propaganda about loose talk sinking ships was dramatized on a recent Ellery Queen show, and the latest Inner Sanctum drama was turned over to the Treasury Department's War Bond Drive.

Theory that war increases listening to escape programs has been taken seriously by the networks, three of which have lately added mystery thrillers to their list of sustaining shows.  New this season on Mutual are Dark Destiny, presenting tales of the supernatural, and Murder Clinic, which dramatizes adventures of famous fiction detectives.  Both originate from WOR and go out to the full network.  Suspense, a detective thriller, started on the Columbia network in June, 1942.  Blue Network within the past month has been scaring its listeners with Horror, Inc., which bowed in on January 17 with Eva Le Gallienne reading a different blood-curdling tidbit each week; The Strange Dr. Karnac, which finds the gentleman of the title in a sinister episode each week involving black magic, began haunting the Blue January 23.
Altho many mystery programs use guest stars, 11 of them maintain the same radio actors for the leading roles each week.  Don McLaughlin plays the FBI agent in Counter-Spy; Carlton Young, Marion Shockley, Santos Ortega and Ted de Corsia are regularly cast in Ellery Queen; Joseph Curtin and Alice  Frost are Mr. and Mrs. North, and Jay Jostyn, Len Doyle and Vicki Vola take the lead roles in Mr. District Attorney.  Claudia Morgan and Lester Damon play Nora and Nick in the Thin Man; Everett Sloan has the part of Dr. Benjamin Ordway in Crime Doctor, and Bennett Kilpack is Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons.  Bill Johnstone and Marjorie Anderson star in The Shadow, and Alan Hewitt had the lead in Bulldog Drummond until his induction into the army.  Mystery shows use on an average of from five to eight actors.
The question of who gets more exhausted from mystery and horror shows on the air--listeners, actors, producers or sound effects men--is one that has recently come up for consideration.  It is claimed by some students of the subject that listeners "enjoy" trembling, sweating and fainting as a result of weird things they hear on the air, because after it is all over they get a wonderful feeling of relief at finding themselves safely sheltered in a warm, dry living room and not swimming in rat-infested sewers or trapped in a cemetery vault with 10 ghosts.  While the listener turns to horror and mystery programs for release, it has been reported that the actors are affected by their own macabre characterizations to the extent of losing weight, voices and nerve.
Not only are the sound effects men, who open and close the special creaking door on Inner Sanctum, clang the giant gong on Lights Out and simulate the footsteps and other eerie sounds indispensable on mystery shows, but organs and--on the higher-priced shows--orchestras are a must.  Fred Fradkin's orchestra augments the ghastly activities on Thin Man; Bernard Herrmann directs the ork on Suspense; Peter Van Steeden's band livens things up on Mr. District Attorney; Frank Novak's band offers the musical interludes on Mr. and Mrs. North, and Ray Bloch is heard on Crime Doctor.  Organists like Charles Paul on Ellery, Lew White on Sanctum, Bob Hamilton on Counter-Spy, and Rosa Rio on Horror, Inc., play a large part in creating the moods, goose pimples and chandelier climbing on the killer-chillers.
While many of the shows are the brain-children of modern script writers, old masters of the sinister and the supernatural are leaned on heavily.  Murder Clinic dramatizes well-known detective stories; Bulldog Drummond borrows its material from H.C. McNeil's famous stories; Horror, Inc., digs down to find the bleakest and most violent bits that have been written; Thin Man is based on the Dashiell Hammett character of literature and films, and Mr. and Mrs. North uses the characters created by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lockridge in their Broadway play and in short stories.  Famous Jury Trials, Gang Busters, and Crime Doctor are credited with being based on actual case histories of criminals and trials.
Tuesday night sends the most mystery shows into American homes, with five of them scheduled, while the peace and quiet of Sunday is broken into by four murder epics.  at 8:30 to 9 p.m. is the most popular scaring hour, with five bloody opuses coming at this time.  Ruthrauff & Ryan leads the agencies in this type of show, producing The Shadow, Ellery Queen and Lights Out, with Lee Cooley supervising the three.  Phillips H. Lord, Inc., which has been arranging Gang Busters for eight years is also producer of Counter-Spy.  Himan Brown, independent producer, does Inner Sanctum, Thin Man and Bulldog Drummond.

There's a great deal to glean from the above article. Of note is one of the rare mentions of the star of an Ellery Queen series--in this instance, Carleton Young. But even more importantly, one can almost immediately grasp the growing tide of what critics began referring to as 'blood and guts' programming. The growing displeasure over the amount of violent or graphic programming of the era eventually resulted in the short-lived National Association of Broadcasters' (NAB) 'curfews' of the mid-1940s. Those curfews--when honored by the networks--self-imposed a voluntary, post-9:30 p.m. curfew on violent or graphic programming across America. Though it's unlikely that these curfews were welcomed by the greater majority of Radio audiences of the era, the Radio critics, politicians, religious groups, local Chambers of Commerce and Networks of the era seemed to put great store in the deleterious effects of spine-chiller, crime, shoot-em-up, and detective mysteries of the era. Indeed, by the 1942 NBC run of The Adventures of Ellery Queen, even the mystery-quiz format of Ellery Queen was moved to the post-curfew timeslot of 9:30 p.m.

The NBC run of The Adventures of Ellery Queen was apparently a victim of its own success for its sponsor, Emerson Drug and its 'Bromo-Seltzer' product. As the popularity of the mystery quiz began to soar, Emerson Drug's ad agency determined that the series had reached a point that its popularity was driving up production costs for the series. Emerson Drug jumped ship from the series during November 1945, moving its sponsorship to The Saint over NBC. As indicated in the sidebar article (left), 'Murder for Money,' it was then estimated that the production costs for each half-hour of The Adventures of Ellery Queen were approximately $3,000 per segment, and rising. Emerson Drug felt it could hold the lesser known The Saint series to around $2,o00 per segment--until it as well grew in popularity equal to The Adventures of Ellery Queen.

This was not uncommon. Emerson Drug sponsored several long-running programs of the era. Its Bromo-Seltzer brand was already well established. Its primary business motivation in continuing to promote the brand over Radio was at the stage of brand maintenance against the encroachments of other similar products also advertising over Radio (Tums, Pepto-Bismol, etc). Sponsors or their ad agencies would often abandon an otherwise successful and popular program once any additional, incremental benefit of continuing to sponsor the program was becoming erased by the increasing production costs of the program.

When the series moved back to CBS, Anacin picked up the tab for the production, keeping most other elements of the format essentially unchanged. Anacin, while an already established pain reliever, found itself in a highly competitive market segment during the mid to late 1940s. Anacin continued sponsoring The Adventures of Ellery Queen for the entire 1945 to 1947 run over CBS, and the short-lived NBC series of 1947.

The production ultimately moved to ABC and its KECA studios in Hollywood beginning November 27, 1947. Airing sustained by the network, the ABC series ran nationwide for another twenty-seven episodes until May 27, 1948, at which point The Adventures of Ellery Queen left Radio airwaves for good. The concept however, was carried on by other Radio and Television productions.

But that wasn't the end of the Ellery Queen franchise. Three attempts to popularize Ellery Queen mysteries over Television met with mixed success over the ensuing eleven years:

  • 1951 The Adventures of Ellery Queen [ABC and DuMont for Kaiser-Frazier and Phillies Cigars]
  • 1954 Mystery Is My Business
  • 1959 The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen [NBC]

ABC Television scheduled a kinescope audition for a proposed Ellery Queen series in February 1950

ABC-TV began kinescoping The Adventures of Ellery Queen in April of 1950

The Ellery Queen Television canons of the 1950s were straight dramatic mystery presentations, having dispensed with the mystery-quiz format altogether. The Adventures of Ellery Queen traversed Television for both DuMont and ABC, eventually airing as Mystery Is My Business by 1957, once the license to use the name "The Adventures of Ellery Queen" had lapsed. For the first five years of the Television series' the productions managed a respectable 10% share.

This was even more remarkable for the early 1950s given the rapidly changing coaxial technologies still being implemented in cities large and small across North America. Some broadcasts were aired via kinescope over one network, while airing live or from film on a competing network. First generation kinescopes, over even the best coaxial infrastructure of the era, were still no equal to either first generation filmed productions or live productions over the better transmission systems. But Television was still such a novelty during 1950 to 1952 that viewing audiences remained remarkably forgiving. Understandably, the programs' sponsors and ad agencies weren't nearly as forgiving. Hence, it was possible for the exact same program airing in the same market, but over two different networks to garner wildly varying viewer shares--owing primarily to the means of transmission. Such were the problems encountered between the DuMont network and the ABC-TV network during their respective runs of The Adventures of Ellery Queen. Had transmissions been more uniform, Television's The Adventures of Ellery Queen might have done even better.

Unfortunately, the longer it aired over Television, the further it drifted from its tried and true formula--and characters. 1958's The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen (NBC) was, by all contemporary critical accounts a stinker of an hour-long, live Ellery Queen vehicle in either full color or black-and-white. George Nader as Ellery Queen was too slick by half and all but indistinguishable from the original Ellery Queen characters previously developed in Print, Film and Radio. Nader was still a remarkably gifted and versatile actor, but the scripts and concept for The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen were simply 'Further' in all the wrong ways--too slick, too hip, too gory, too everything.

In the final analysis, each succeeding attempt to increase the longevity of the Television franchise of Ellery Queen seemed to result in productions even more of an aberration of the original Ellery Queen characters than before. The Golden Age of Television franchise of Ellery Queen ultimately jumped the shark in 1959. It wasn't until the highly successful Ellery Queen Mysteries of 1976, starring Jim Hutton as Ellery Queen, that the franchise rediscovered its roots.

Ellery Queen Mysteries aired as a full hour-long production, interspersing the plot with several expositional, in-character breaks by Jim Hutton as Ellery Queen--or David Wayne, as Inspector Queen, while teasing plot points and possible clues to the viewing audience. The novel approach alerted the viewing audience to clues it may have overlooked during the course of the usually very clever script(s). Set in the late 1940s to 1950s, in yet another nod to the original Radio programs John Hillerman, as Simon Brimmer, a fictional, gentleman crime detective of the 'era,' hosted his own Radio program during several episodes in much the same vein as the original Adventures of Ellery Queen Radio broadcasts. 'Simon Brimmer' would often broadcast an ongoing mystery investigation over his Radio program, attempting to one-up Ellery Queen and Inspector Queen as they attempted to solve the same mystery or crime.

There's a certain symmetry to the Ellery Queen franchise having come full circle at last. Ellery Queen Mysteries wasn't a mystery-quiz with on screen participants per se, but the producers of Ellery Queen Mysteries had wisely managed to reconnect with the very element that had so popularized Ellery Queen over Radio for ten years--teasing the clues and giving the listening, and then viewing, audiences a chance to participate equally. That will remain Jim Hutton's legacy now, and his tip o' the hat to the legacy of Ellery Queen.

But then fast forward twenty-five years and Jim Hutton's Oscar-winning son, Tim Hutton, repeats a tip o' the hat to Nero Wolfe--this time with Hutton's own award-winning production, A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001-2002). And in the steps of his father, Tim Hutton creates yet another fine send up to a classic detective fiction icon. They say the branch doesn't fall far from the tree. Jim Hutton clearly passed on his respect for a tried and true formula to his son. That's an even more poignant--and satisfying--symmetry.

OTRisms:

We remain at a loss to understand the episode numbering systems employed throughout much of the OTR segment of the Vintage Radio collecting community. Naturally we get that the commercial OTR interests of the hobby have been driving things for the past 35 years. One supposes that, since these recordings are simply income-generating commodities to most of them, why not simply number every program that has the words "Ellery Queen" in it as one long run of The Adventures of Ellery Queen and be done with it.

The silliness that arises from logging many of the vintage Radio canons of the era in this manner is generally the result of extreme short-sightedness--or more likely sloppiness--on the part of the mostly commercial OTR concerns:

  • They care not one whit if--or whether--any number of ambiguities have arisen over the last 35 years regarding possible preemptions or non-aired programs--for whatever reasons.
  • They dumb down the entire hobby by unilaterally stating that Canon 'X' that ran for, say 15 years, is to simply be numbered '1' to infinity. And irrespective of breaks of as long as 4 years between series' within the canon, network changes, significant format changes, or format-altering sponsor changes--and that, by gum, is that.
  • They consequently make no allowance whatsoever for further historical discoveries regarding the historically accurate run history of a given canon.
  • Slaves to the automated OTTER System as many are--incurably flawed as it remains to this day--they can make no rational allowance for the several series' of the era that may have aired on one day weekly from the West Coast and a different day weekly from the Midwest or East Coast. There remain few if any reliable workarounds for OTTER's limitations in this respect:
    • Going by 'their rules' one might understandably sequentially number each and every theoretical broadcast of a given period chronologically, with the earliest of either region's offerings of the exact same production preceding its counterpart, chronologically, from the other regions.
    • Were it not for OTTER's limitations, one might well be able to catalog such a series, during such a period, with the annotations '(W)', '(M)', or '(E)', depending on its origination from the West Coast, Midwest, or East Coast. Such a practice is simply not possible with OTTER.

What we continue to fail to understand is the majority of the OTR community's failure to recognize the uniqueness of a particular broadcast run within a canon of productions:

  • Does it really make sense to continue to sequentially number a canon of similar broadcasts with breaks of as many as 4 years between the various sub-series' that comprise the canon?
  • Does it make any sense to continue to sequentially number a sub-series of a canon that had fundamentally changed for a period of months or years?
  • Or one that had, by the influence of its sponsor or network, begun to fundamentally change the format of a sub-series to incorporate its messages into the scripts?
  • Or the most obvious situation in a long-running canon--an inordinate number of network and sponsor changes throughout its run history [a good number of NBC-broadcast canons spring to mind].

See here's the thing about such inherently flawed, short-sighted canon-numbering systems. What if something's discovered that no one previously knew about the canon? But that could never ever happen, right? 'Experts' have already anointed the series as 'complete' as is. Absolutely nothing whatsoever could ever change that, no?

Well guess what? Things often do change, once they're further or more accurately documented. We've encountered literally hundreds of such anomalies in preparing our 400 'Definitive' logs to date. Such is the nature of any historical cataloging endeavor. And what happens to all those tens of thousands of private collections once a key discovery demands a complete resequencing of a canon? Oops!

There are no 'cookie-cutter' solutions to sequencing all known canons of vintage Radio recordings. Nor will there ever be. And that's as it should be. If a sub-series of a canon breaks for, say at least a year, that's a new sequence. If a previously sustaining series undergoes a radical change in format owing to any of the situations cited above, that's a new sequence. If a canon has run for say 10 years over three networks, those are three sequences of series within the canon. It's not rocket science. Now, say something's rediscovered regarding that canon. Only the sub-series need be resequenced instead of the entire 1935 to 1954 run. Makes sense, no? . . . Well maybe not so much to the commercial OTR interests and oligarchs. Buts that's our point.

It should.

We've often railed against phony 'East Coast--West Coast' runs of a given canon, especially those which were transcribed, canned and syndicated uniformly to all broadcast recipients. The Adventures of Ellery Queen, during its first NBC run, did indeed occasionally broadcast differing renditions of a program, differing primarily in the guest armchair detective(s) for a given program. Though we have no exemplars from which to compare differing East and West coast broadcasts of the NBC series, we know from contemporaneous newspaper listings of the era that the guest detectives did indeed vary occasionally. We have every reason to believe that such comparisons are indeed available within some of the larger private collections. But with only some thirty to forty genuine The Adventures of Ellery Queen in current circulation, such comparisons are simply not available at present.

Finally, this is yet another of the circulating canons that's been widely misrepresented as more complete than it currently is. Fully six recordings that we're aware of are not from any of the original broadcast canon of The Adventures of Ellery Queen. Some of the less reputable dealers have also been passing off recordings of a truncated recording of the premiere episode of Author! Author! as an exemplar of The Adventures of Ellery Queen. Others have been passing off Grace Gibson-licensed exemplars of Australian broadcasts of The Adventures of Ellery Queen as American broadcasts, as if the purchaser wouldn't immediately be alerted to the all-Australian casts of such exemplars. And of course we have the almost universal practice of arbitrarily relabeling exemplars from the various AFRS canons of their denatured and re-recorded Ellery Queen programs.

There's little doubt that far more exemplars of Ellery Queen will eventually be released. For now we have about a fifth of the originally broadcast output to enjoy. Presumably those sitting on the hundreds of other exemplars in private holdings will one day mature out of their bragging rights phase and release far more of them for the enjoyment of future generations.

Although he always knows the solution in advance George Zachary, who produces the "Ellery Queen" mysteries on CBS is beginning to feel pretty much like a sleuth himself. He spends half his time tracking down clues—but not in the Sherlock Holmes sense Zachary checks them. Listen to the mystery program on KGLO Sunday from 6 to 6:55 p. m.
"Every mystery script has to have a focal clue on which the action hinges," he says. "The clue is usually some tiny detail in the story—a slot machine, a date, a baseball score board—but it must be the give-away to the murderer's identity. AS it usually happens, all members of the CBS Ellery Queen cast are not in the studio when the mystery is finally solved. So the
members of the cast have made up a pool, each chipping in a dime and then guessing who the murderer is. Actor Ted de Corsia has won it three times now, with Robert Strauss a close second with two wins.
People were suspecting De Corsia of having inside information, but we can vouch for the difficulty of finding out any dope before the show begins. We went to a recent broadcast and tried to get Actor Ray Hedge to tell us who the murderer was. He wouldn't so much as give us the initials. When the show was over we learned that Ray Hedge played the murderer.

NEW ADVENTURE
"Tell-Tale Bottle"
Is Latest Mystery
For CBS Sherlock
"The Adventure of the Tell-Tale Bottle" will be dramatized this Sunday night on the Ellery Queen detective series, heard over KGLO, through CBS, at 7 p. m
As the handsome, clever sleuth and his pretty secretary, Nikki proceed to an investigation and solution of the mystery, four amateur contestants will attempt to beat the professionals to the unravelling. One armchair detective will be a Tulane university coed, Alvena Smith, in New York for the Tulane-Columbia football game.
An interesting revelation is the explanation of the radio detective's odd name. The authors of the series, Manny Lee and Fred Dannay, wanted to compound a name for their hero that would become well-remembered. They decided, since Q was the most unusual alphabetic letter, and then, since "Queen" presented definite picture, that was to be their figure's last name.
"Ellery" was chosen for its rare application, and thereupon the completed pseudonym was tested on the friends of Dannay and Lee for tenacity to the memory. The name stuck in all cases tried and it now sticks in the minds of millions of Sunday night listeners all over the nation.

Carleton G. Young, ca. 1953

Carleton G. Young, ca. 1958
Carleton G. Young, ca. 1958

Carleton G. Young was one of Radio's most successful and busy actors for over twenty years--and some 8,000 to 10,000 appearances in Radio. Destined to be forever confused with or mistaken for Carleton Scott Young another successful Film, Stage, Radio and Television actor, Carleton G. Young nevertheless clearly set himself apart in both Radio and Television.

Both possessed of very distinctive deep baritone voices, the confusion between the two Carleton Youngs is perhaps forgiveable, and yet there are several notable differences in their repsective careers that certainly set them on separate paths. For one, Carleton G. Young's physical appearance was more polished and clean cut than the Film actor Carleton Young. The Film actor was more a character actor. Carleton G. Young was certainly star material, and indeed played the lead in several Radio programs during his 20-year career in Radio. His most vocal fans would probably cite his year-long portrayal of Ellery Queen (1943), a Radio program that's taken on almost cult status and which remains very rare to this day.

Others might cite his nine-year portrayal as the Count of Monte Cristo in the Radio program of the same name (1949). Still others might more animatedly recall his long running appearance as John Galt in Radio's The Whisperer (1951) another Radio cult favorite of tens of thousands of Radio fans. He also played the lead role of Producer-Director Ted Lawton in some thirty-nine episodes of Hollywood Mystery Time (1945).

Carleton G. Young's truest fans will recall his extensive body of work spanning some 350+ separate Radio productions over his Radio career. During that time, Carleton Young lent his amazing voice to every dramatic Radio format imaginable, portraying a bewildering array of characters with equal ease. From
detective dramas to adventures to straight dramatic roles to even the over-the-top melodrama of his role as Philip Galt, The Whisperer, Carleton Young's unmistakeable diction, polished delivery, and highly distinctive baritone promised a Radio adventure to remember, and he never failed to deliver on that promise.

Indeed as Radio's Golden Age waned, Carleton G. Young made a smooth transition to The Golden Years of Television with equal aplomb. From Television's earliest Superman adventures through fifteen years of significant contributions to Television's wonderful Drama anthologies, Carleton G. Young was one of those male actors blessed with both the looks and air of a more and more distiguished gentleman the more he physically aged. Adding another 200+ appearances to his Television resume, Carleton G. Young's Stage, Screen, Radio and Television career ultimately spanned over forty-five years before passed on the Acting baton to his son Tony Young, another distinguished Film and Television actor in his own right.

Carleton G. Young passed away in 1971 at the age of 64, but not before seeing his own son embark onto a versatile, successful Entertainment career of his own. A fitting postscript to the life of an actor who met every new role and every new challenge with equal excellence. The Golden Age of Radio may have waned, but interest in Carelton G. Young's body of work over Radio is as intense as it's ever been. A fitting and well-deserved tribute to one of Radio's most memorable--and durable--voices.

Ted De Corsia (far left) appears with Harry Von Zell as one of the ensemble actors for Time Marches On! (1934)
From the April 12, 1973 Edition of the Long Beach Press-Telegram:

Villain actor Ted De Corsia dies

Character actor TED De CORSIA, whose career included stints in radio, motion pictures and television died Wednesday at 69 in Encino.  Death was attributed to natural causes.
Known best for his portrayals of villains, the veteran actor held radio series roles in March of Time, Ellery Queen and the Hallmark Theater.
His movie credits include roles in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," "Naked City," "Lady From Shanghai," "The Outriders" and "Folsom Prison."
De Corsia played Mike Hammer in the 1950s in the "Mickey Spillane Mysteries" television series.
He is survived by two daughters, DIERDRE De CORSIA of San Francisco and MRS. WILLIAM SHIRK of Santa Barbara.

We remain huge fans of Ted De Corsia's body of work over the years. We'd even take issue with the above obituary's characterization of Ted De Corsia as a 'Villain'. Though most of his Film credits were indeed as mostly heavies, we found the greater majority of De Corsia's Radio and Television work to be a wonderfully diverse mixture of characterizations.

If we have any regrets over Ted De Corsia's myriad characterizations, it's that he didn't appear in more series' as the lead. He certainly had the voice, talent and presence to command more leading roles. In all likelihood he was simply a victim of his own remakable success in portraying literally thousands of heavies or other gruff, blustering stereotypes over his long and distinquished career. Ted De Corsia had lead roles as Detective Dan McGarry in McGarry and His Mouse (1946), as Inspector Peter Black in Pursuit! (1950), as Mike Hammer in That Hammer Guy (1952) and as Captain Christopher Courage in The Adventure of Captain Courage (1955).

De Corsia's performances over both Radio and Television remain our overall favorites. Ruggedly handsome and imposing, when his millions of Radio fans finally got the opportunity to 'see' his visage in Television the voice clearly matched the 'presence.'

We've highlighted his work in many of our other articles, including 26 by Corwin, The Adventures of Maisie, Bold Venture, Boston Blackie, Columbia Workshop, CBS Radio Workshop, Christopher London, Dr. Kildare, Escape!, Frontier Gentleman, Great Plays, Hallmark Playhouse, Let George Do It, Line Up, Molle Mystery Theater, Murder Clinic, Mystery In the Air, Night Beat, Pat Novak for Hire, Pursuit, Richard Diamond, Rogues Gallery, Secret Agent K-7 Returns, The Silent Men, T-Man, That Hammer Guy, and The Saint.

Ted De Corsia had one of those voices that remain almost instantly recognizable, much in the vein of Jackson Beck, Raymond Burr, Robert Strauss, Bill Conrad, Marvin Miller, and Paul Frees. The type of 'register' that invariably gets the woofer vibrating well beyond the norm in anyone's home theater system. With that barrel chest, those piercing eyes, hands like hamhocks, and a neck like an ox, Ted De Corsia's presence in any medium always made itself known.

A life-long Brooklyn Dodgers fan, Ted De Corsia even went as far as to ask the announcer of one of his regular programs--Joe and Mabel (1941)--to announce on air The Bums' scores during relevant performances. During the New York broadcasts of The Adventures of Ellery Queen, Ted De Corsia owned a poultry farm near New York, often selling his eggs to other members of the Ellery Queen cast and production crew.

Quietly Yours . . .

6'3" Ernest Chappell, born and raised in Syracuse, New York was literally and figuratively, Syracuse's fair-haired boy. Star athlete in high school and Syracuse University, local sportscaster, graduate of Syracuse University, local D.J. and emcee, Radio Director of local Syracuse station WFBL [''First Broadcast License''], and local columnist for the Syracuse Herald with his own byline, Riding The Waves with Chap.

Universally well liked and admired, for Chappell, Radio was his oyster for 50 years throughout The Golden Age of Radio.

Radio Pioneer Hopes To Begin New Career

One of radio's pioneers was in Denton this week for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Conley, 108 Forest St.
Ernest Chappell, voice of the American Tobacco Co. on radio and television for more than 20 years stopped in Denton en route home from a 10,000-mile business - vacation trip.
Accompanying him were his wife, Margie, and their two children, Susie and Jimmy.
Chappell began in radio 42 years ago, when the industry was an infant of 15 years.  In the past, his fame spread to the extent that he received mail in New York City, addressed simply, "Chappy."
Now, he's preparing for semi-retirement from that field, only to embark upon  new career.
Chappell said, "I'm not interested in making a pile of money now--I don't need that.  But what I am interested in is doing something about this country's sense of values."
He plans, with other backers, to found a non-sectarian college in Palm Beach, Fla., and eventually to add it to a school of engineering for radio and television aspirants.
Also included in Chappell's future plans is ownership of management of a television station.  He'd like to work with Dr. Tom Moody, president of the Southern Baptist Pastors Association, in founding a new method for aiding in the spiritual development of the young people of America.
The method he has outlined would begin daily telecasts in the morning with a "thought for the day."  Noon programs would be designed to help viewers develop the habit of meditation.  And final moments of daily telecasting time would be a presentation of a hymn by such artists as Kate Smith and "Tennessee" Ernie Ford.
But looking ahead to a new field occupies only a portion of Chappell's time--he also recalls stories about some of the big-name stars with whom he's worked during the past 42 years.
Rudy Vallee was one.  And there was Orson Welles on CBS' "Hello, Americans," and David Ross and Edward R. Murrow.  And a list too long to complete.  And, of course, North Texas State University artist-in-residence Eugene Conley.
Conley and Chappell met "back in '35 or '36" when the future Metropolitan opera star was still singing in church choirs.
Chappell was in Boston to hear auditions for one of his radio programs.  He heard Conley sing, and sent him on to New York City.  They've been fast friends ever since, even though Conley and his wife eventually came to Texas and NTSU.
When Chappell became an independent contractor in 1932, he was asked to cast a program for Herbert Diamond Co. of New York.  It became the Herbert Diamond Entertainers, with Vallee singing two numbers.  A dance band played and guest artists appeared regularly.
"I thought the show was going along fine," Chappell recalls.  "The firm was selling it's merchandise and they liked the show.
"Then one day the manager called me into his office and said, "Look here at this stack of letters."
"All of them were protesting against presenting dance music on Sunday afternoon.  So the show--and Vallee--had to go.
"Later I put him in another show on Thursday nights, and that was okay.  But not on Sunday, no matter how popular he was."
