Background

The background of the 'The Falcon' character is as much of a mystery as the stories, films, and radio and television mysteries that the various The Falcon franchises spawned from 1936 through the 1950s. The introduction of The Falcon character may have arrived through Bulgarian-born Armenian author Michael Arlen, born Dikran Kouyoumdjian in 1895. Raised and educated in England, Kouyoumdjian began writing under the pen name Michael Arlen in the early 1920s. He changed his name legally to Michael Arlen in 1922. Arlen's most immediate successes came from writing mostly romance novels, one of which, The Green Hat, resulted in a Broadway play, The Green Hat (1925) starring Katherine Cornell, and soon after mounted in London's West End, starring Talullah Bankhead--at the time the darling of the West End. The Green Hat was subsequently turned into a silent film, A Woman of Affairs (1928) starring John Gilbert and Greta Garbo. The Green Hat was further adapted as Outcast Lady (1934) starring Constance Bennett and Herbert Marshall.

But it was Arlen's last fictional short story "The Gay Falcon" (1940) that may have established the franchise of The Falcon, the nickname derived from the last name of Arlen's character, 'Gay Stanhope Falcon,' in the short story. Gay Stanhope Falcon was a 'gentleman sleuth,' of the type of character very much the rage from the 1880s through the 1950s. The Falcon character caught the interest of Hollywood, launching a long-running, popular franchise of The Falcon films beginning with "The Gay Falcon" in 1941.

In fact it was legendary CBS and Columbia Workshop engineer, producer, director, writer and creator Irving Reis that directed the first three 'The Falcon' films from R.K.O. Never actually revealing why the character adopted the nickname, The Falcon, the nickname couldn't be traced to the film character's name, which became 'Gay Lawrence,' as originally portrayed by George Sanders. Had the film character retained the name 'Gay Stanhope Falcon,' the etymology of The Falcon would have made considerably more sense going forward. In any case, The Falcon Film franchise ultimately comprised the following sixteen films:

  • 1941 The Gay Falcon
  • 1942 A Date with the Falcon
  • 1942 The Falcon Takes Over
  • 1942 The Falcon's Brother
  • 1943 The Falcon Strikes Back
  • 1943 The Falcon in Danger
  • 1943 The Falcon and the Co-eds
  • 1944 The Falcon in Hollywood
  • 1944 The Falcon in Mexico
  • 1944 The Falcon Out West
  • 1945 The Falcon in San Francisco
  • 1946 The Falcon's Adventure
  • 1946 The Falcon's Alibi
  • 1948 Devil's Cargo
  • 1948 Appointment with Murder
  • 1949 Search for Danger

George Sanders retained the role of The Falcon, as 'Gay Lawrence' for the first four The Falcon films. The role almost immediately undertook a transition with Raymond Chandler's novel, Farewell My Lovely, adapted as the third The Falcon film, The Falcon Takes Over (1942). The film loosely shoe-horned Arlen's The Falcon character into Chandler's famous Philip Marlowe novel that only two years later found its way to film with Murder, My Sweet (1944) starring Dick Powell as Philip Marlowe. The Falcon's fourth outing introduced George Sanders' brother Tom Conway, as his on-screen brother, 'Tom Lawrence'. So as to avoid a spoiler alert, we'll leave it that Gay Lawrence departed the franchise with The Falcon's fourth film, The Falcon's Brother (1942).

Tom Conway, as Tom Lawrence, continued The Falcon franchise for nine more films, ultimately departing the franchise with The Falcon's Alibi (1946). It's at this point that we must take The Falcon character on a mysterious digression.

Enter Drexel Drake's 'Michael Waring' as The Falcon

It remains something of a mystery how Michael Arlen's 'The Falcon' character morphed into Drexel Drake's 'The Falcon' character beginning in 1943 over both Radio and Television. Drexel Drake was reportedly the pen name of Charles H. Huff. Drake had written a brief series of detective novels featuring a protagonist nicknamed 'The Falcon' beginning with The Falcon's Prey (1936). Drake followed up with The Falcon Cuts In (1937), The Falcon Meets A Lady (1938) and The Falcon Strikes (1938). And in a further point of confusion, Drake's The Falcon character in Print was known to friends as 'Malcom J. Wingate.'

Given that Drexel Drake's 'The Falcon' character predated Michael Arlen's 'Gay Stanhope Falcon' character by almost four years, some understandable confusion arises as to which of the two incarnations of 'The Falcon' was truly the character depicted in The Falcon Film franchise. Michael Arlen had already become a Hollywood fixture by 1941, so one might reasonably presume that any ambiguity as to the ownership of The Falcon character was resolved by RKO's legendary legal division in the course of mounting the original thirteen The Falcon films. Given Irving Reis' own demonstrated legacy of extraordinary attention to detail, it's highly improbable that Reis would have left such a glaring detail unanswered--unless he'd already answered it to his own satisfaction.

Neither are we aware of any 'big' or 'small' screen credits for either Drexel Drake or Charles H. Huff--as either a writer or creator. None of the credits for any of The Falcon films or Television programs cite Drexel Drake or Charles H. Huff. All of the films featuring The Falcon cited Michael Arlen as the creator of the character(s).

It wasn't until Devil's Cargo (1948) starring John Calvert that The Falcon's screenname became first 'Michael Watling,' then ultimately 'Michael Waring' with Seach for Danger (1949). A possible clue is contained within 1948's Film Classics offering, Devil's Cargo. Throughout Devil's Cargo, whenever the name 'Michael Watling' is spoken, it's very obviously overdubbed. One is therefore tempted to surmise that the name originally uttered throughout the script for Devil's Cargo was 'Michael Waring,' not 'Michael Watling.' Clearly there'd been some form of legal wrangling which resulted in the overdubbing of the entire film.

The etymological mystery was further clouded with the premiere of The Blue Network's The Adventures of The Falcon over Radio on April 10, 1943, first starring Radio veteran Berry Kroeger as Michael Waring. The creator of those first The Adventures of The Falcon programs was credited as Drexel Drake. And indeed, for the ensuing eleven years of The Falcon franchise over Radio, it was 'Michael Waring' that became the name of The Falcon. One can only conclude that sometime between 1942 and 1943, Drexel Drake acquired some form of license to his character 'Michael Waring' as The Falcon--or perhaps limited to radioplay incarnations of The Falcon character.

Whatever the ultimate resolution of this mystery, from 1943 to 1956 over both Radio and Television, the true identity of The Falcon became--and remained--'Michael Waring.' And indeed, in Film, The Falcon's true identity as Michael Waring surfaced in only the last Film Classics 'B' movie Search For Danger (1949), with John Calvert retaining the role of The Falcon through the end of the Film franchise.

NBC-Blue Network launches The Falcon franchise over Radio

Irrespective of the resolution of the convoluted etymology of the various The Falcon characters, April 10, 1943 launched a thirteen-year Radio and Television franchise of urbane, highly educated, and independently wealthy Michael Waring as a new nemesis of injustice and espionage, The Falcon. The Adventures of The Falcon ran off and on over the ensuing eleven years over Radio and ultimately over Television for another three years. Debuting over NBC's Blue Network (WJZ), the series appeared over The Blue Network (ABC), the Mutual Broadcasting System (MBS) and the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), then ultimately over CBS as Television's The Falcon, starring Charles McGraw as 'Mike' Waring.

NBC had first teased its contemplated 'Gay Falcon' series during January 1943. Kreuger Brewing had expressed interest in sponsoring the concept but had withdrawn its offer by late January of 1943. NBC was still teasing the series' launch as February 3, 1943. Eventually launched on April 10, 1943 over NBC-Blue, The Adventures of The Falcon debuted with Berry Kroeger as Michael Waring, alias The Falcon. By October 12, 1943 the only recently formed 'The Blue Network,' assumed the assets of WJZ, New York, WENR, Chicago, and KGO, San Francisco. WJZ had originated The Adventures of The Falcon from its New York studios. Those NBC-Blue and WJZ assets included The Adventures of The Falcon.

Set in cosmopolitan New York City, the series was initially an east coast production supported by many of the finer New York Radio talents of the era. The Blue Network series aired for thirty-nine episodes as a comedy-mystery, 30-minute format for the most part sustained by The Blue Network, though there may well have been local sponsor breaks in some of the original broadcasts. Failing to find a sponsor, the series ended on December 29, 1943.

The Mutual Broadcasting System launched its production of The Adventures of The Falcon fully a year and a half later on July 3, 1945 retaining the comedy-mystery-adventure format of the original Blue Network production. The reprised series initially featured Broadway, Radio and Film actor James Meighan as Michael Waring, followed by Radio legend Les Tremayne. That first nationwide broadcast of The Adventures of The Falcon was sponsored by Gem Razors and Blades for the entire intial MBS run of 117 installments. Airing from July 3, 1945 through September 23, 1947, the series found increasing popularity throughout the MBS run.

From the August 11th, 1948 edition of the Canton Repository:

48-08-11 The Falcon Crosby Review

PHILO VANCE, the brains trust invented by S.S. Van Dine, now has a secretary, a flippant, hard-boiled girl, just like all the other secretaries to private detectives in radio.  The Philo Vance I used to know in fiction wouldn't tolerate her for a minute, but the radio version of Philo (Mutual, 10 p.m. Mondays) is quite a different proposition.

Philo used to be quite an intellectual and bon vivant.  In the radio version he's just another smoothie with an eye for the ladies and a collection of wisecracks that would make the late author spin in his grave.
I don't know why they insist on desecrating well known fictional characters this way.  Maybe a union rule among radio's private eyes requires hiring these girls.
I expect Sherlock Holmes will have to fire faithful old Watson one of these days and employ one of these flippant babes to hand him the needle.  Holmes also will have to learn the language, will have to master the art of snarling out of the corner of his mouth:  "You'll burn for this, Moriarity."

WHEN THAT DAY comes, I won't answer for the safety of the cast.  Sherlock Holmes fans everywhere will hie themselves to the nearest gunsmiths and then descend on the studios.
This profanation of well known literary works is not confined entirely to mystery yarns.  Some time ago on the "Romance" program I heard a version of Rudyard Kipling's "The Light That Failed" in which that great story was coated heavily with sugar, or, as they call it in radio, romance.  Instead of dying with a bullet through his brain, as in the novel, the artist hero wound up in the girl's arms, gibbering about love, love, love.  It was enough to whiten the hair of a Kipling man.

"THE LONE WOLF" (Mutual, 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays) is another wisecracking bachelor who solves crimes for no apparent reason and who is irresistible t women, particularly bad ones.  In a recent episode, the girl was Sandra, and a bum if ever I heard one.  In the end she was asking him to take her to dinner and he played with this notion in arch tones that suggested he was interested in more than food.
Seems to me this sort of coy suggestiveness is approaching sex on tiptoes in much the same way the novelist once used asterisks.  About the only other thing you need knew about this wolf is that his program is usually studded with bodies and there are more than the usual number of suspects.

"THE FALCON" (Mutual, 8 p.m. Mondays) is a distant cousin of the Lone Wolf.  The only difference between the two, as near as I can see, is the fact that the Falcon appears to devastate repressed women, rather than just bad ones.
This is adventure without mystery, or with only a minimum of it, but there is a good deal of gore, a lot of very tough talk, much of emitting from the side of the mouth, and some painful overacting.
Inevitably, at the end, there is a long explanation from the Falcon as to how he figured all this out, that I find superfluous, since I generally have it figured out way ahead of the Falcon.

HOWEVER, I'm indebted to the Falcon for adding a nugget to my collection of understatements.  "No, he says, but yes, I say," one of the characters declared.  "You've got to listen to me."  What this character was objecting to in the mildest possible way was being killed.  Oh, well, I suppose in the make-believe world of murder mysteries death is so commonplace as to be regarded as a minor inconvenience, no worse than a bad cold.

NBC reacquired TheAdventures of The Falcon from the Summer of 1950 through the Fall of 1952, at which point The Mutual Broadcasting System picked it up again from January 1953 until the Fall of 1954, at which point all new productions of The Adventures of the Falcon ended altogether. CBS had already picked up a film series of The Falcon for Television, starring Charles McGraw. Radio continued to air rebroadcasts of the Mutual productions of The Adventures of The Falcon from November 1954 well into 1957 in various smaller, regional and local markets.

We'd love to provide a more authoritative comparison and contrast between the various renditions of The Adventures of The Falcon over the years. Sadly, Berry Kroeger renditions of The Falcon have yet to enter circulation. We have only James Meighan, Les Tremayne, Les Damon and George Petrie to compare to each other.

Of those exemplars in circulation we can establish that the format for the canon remained fairly intact from the very outset. The minor format changes that did occur over the years, reflected the interests of their respective listening audience tastes and priorities over the same period. The War years and their aftermath were duly reflected in the subject matter of most of the circulating exemplars from that era. As the series matured, it evolved more away from the comedy-mystery format to a crime mystery format to an espionage adventure format and finally back to its comedy-mystery roots. Given that the series traversed three major networks--back and forth--throughout the same period, it becomes clear that none of the series' producers had any desire to dramatically alter The Falcon's tried and true formulae over the years.

Depending on the network and/or its sponsorship, the basic formula teased a glimpse of the ensuing plot, reinforced the derivation of the Falcon character and its roots in Print, Film and preceding Radio productions, and announced the title of the night's episode. At the close of most episodes of the canon, the title of the next week's episode was also announced along with a brief synopsis of the following week's plot.

Airing sustained for the majority of its broadcasts, the series did find three major sponsors: Gem Razors and Blades, the new antihistamine of the era, 'Anahist,' and Camel Cigarettes. That the series aired sustained by its respective networks throughout most of the canon is as much a testament to its audience loyalty as to the quality and variety of its scripts.

As noted above, Drexel Drake is credited with creating the character employed for the Radio renditions of The Falcon. Richard Lewis directed the majority of the broadcasts, with Bernard L. Schubert producing and transcribing most of the canon.

Of the circulating exemplars, Gene Wang is credited with the lion's share of the scripts with Jerome Epstein credited with most of the remaining circulating episodes. The signature organ music accompaniment was provided by Milton Kaye and 'Arlo,' with Harry Sosnik, Emerson Buckley, and Richard DuPage credited as composer/conductors over the years.

Produced first from New York, then from Hollywood, and finally New York again, the series had its pick of the finest East and West Coast voice talent of the era: Berry Kroeger, James Meighan, Jackson Beck, Brett Morrison, Joan Alexander, Les Damon, Elaine Rost, Ralph Bell, Mason Adams, Betty Garde, Espeth Eric, Mandel Kramer, Everett Sloane, George Petrie, and Bryna Raeburn from New York, in particular.

Michael 'Mike' Waring introduced the overwhelming number of episodes with the ring of his home phone and a different female interest on the other end for almost every episode. He'd invariably be forced to demur to an invitation to join these hundreds of 'Little Black Book' entries over the years due to the constant demands of his 480-plus adventures over the same period. This was yet another testament to the series' enduring tag line:

"The Falcon, the sleuth who provided 'a hand to oppressed men and an eye toward repressed women.'"

Quite deliberately dedicated to "private investigators everywhere. Those hard-hitting detectives who, like Mike Waring, risk their lives to aid law enforcement agencies," the series expanded to international adventures over the years. For three years, on and off, Mike Waring was cast as an International Agent, the better to address injustice throughout the post-War world. George Petrie's characterization of Mike Waring had him circling the planet in an effort to curb international crime and espionage.

That theme also transitioned to the espionage adventure theme that ushered in the CBS Television era of The Adventures of the Falcon, with veteran film actor Charles McGraw as Mike Waring. Launched as a novelty in Television for its time, television's Adventures of The Falcon were initially developed as fifty-two, 30-minute films, initially airing five nights a week as stand-alone dramas. When CBS picked them up they began airing weekly from the Fall of 1954 through the Fall of 1956.

SOMETHING NEW
IN PROGRAMMING

What appears to be quite an idea in television programming will appear on KRON-TV come the week of October 4.
A film series entitled "The Falcon" starring Charles McGraw as an undercover agent, will make its debut on KRON-TV Monday night at 11 o'clock. The new program idea here is that the "Falcon" will be seen every night from 11 to 11:30.
We can't think of any other drama program that has been presented in this manner, with a complete self-contained story line. We understand KRON-TV's sales manager and ex-oficio station manager cooked this one up all by himself. Congratulations, Norm Lavou.

Berry Kroeger in Demon Seed (1977)
As noted from his casting card at left, Berry Kroeger had already been a Radio performer for 10 years by 1942. Young Berry Kroeger was born, raised and educated in the Alamo Heights area of San Antonio, Texas, a very affluent annex of San Antonio. His family was prominent in San Antonio's society and well respected and admired from all contemporaneous accounts. Berry's father was an independent construction contractor as well as an active philanthropist and local volunteer to all manner of civic causes.

While attending Brackenridge Senior School, Berry Kroeger was actively involved in the school's drama productions. Kroeger briefly attended the University of California at Berkley after graduating from high school, returning in the summers and for holidays to perform in--and eventually direct--many of San Antonio's Little Theatre plays. Indeed the draw of San Antonio's rich theatrical traditions eventually brought Kroeger back to San Antonio by 1931, to complete his education at the local Junior College, while becoming much more active in the community theatre productions in and around San Antonio. The San Pedro Playhouse, especially, came to be Kroeger's theatrical home for several years.

Between 1931 and 1935, Berry Kroeger continued to commute back and forth between California and San Antonio dependent only upon the demands or offers of Radio work on the coast or theatrical productions back home in San Antonio.

In September 1935, Kroeger packed up his auto and committed to giving Hollywood one good, solid run, driving from San Antonio to Hollywood to settle in for the duration--if his luck holds up. With some four years of stage directing experience and seven years of acting experience under his belt, Kroeger has every expectation of succeeding in Hollywood in any medium he chooses.

CBS Radio signed Berry Kroeger to a two-year contract in 1936, which eventually leads to numerous appearances in Calling All Cars, a production well suited to Kroeger's extraordinary range of character ages, versatility and authority. He also shows versatility in Dr. Christian, CBS Forecast, Columbia Workshop, Suspense, and Words at War for CBS. Kroeger also shows his durability as he begins to appear regularly on several of the daytime serials of the era.

From the 46-07-07 San Antonio Light:

Berry Kroeger, former San Antonian, is much around Broadway these days and has changed his first name to Barry. He will have the leading role in the CBS Grand Central Station program starting July 6.
Before Kroeger went to New York he played with the Pasadena Playhouse in California, with Max Reinhardt in Hollywood. Among his Broadway plays were ''The World's Full of Girls" and the Margaret Webster productions of "The Tempest" and "Theater."
He has acted in such radio programs as "The Falcon," "Light of the World," "The Inner Sanctum" and "The Thin Man."

Through the remainder of the 1940s, Kroeger continues to work in Radio--mostly out of New York, while occasionally appearing on the Broadway Stage with stars such as Ingrid Bergman in Joan of Lorraine (1947). 1947 also found Kroeger in two small, but breakout roles in Iron Curtain and Down To The Sea In Ships. His role in Iron Curtain was the better role, but he recieved far better screen credit in Down To The Sea In Ships even though much of his scripted performance ended up on the cutting room floor, for time.

By the time the 1949 Alan Ladd film noir feature, Chicago Deadline began screening, Berry Kroeger had begun the inescapable move toward being typecast as all manner of unsavory character of one type or another. No longer the tall, muscular, youthful appearing actor--in film in any case--the remainder of Barry Kroeger's acting career would find him playing almost exclusively naughty fellows of on type or another over every medium--Stage, Screen, Television and Radio.

But it was indeed Television that truly occupied the lion's share of Kroeger's time from the 1950s on. This, on top of what had already become an almost 25 year career on the Stage, a 20 year career in Radio and a 10 year career in Film--by the age of 38.

His hair having turned prematurely gray in his late-20s, Kroeger found himself hoist by the incredible range of his own voice and characterizations. While only 38, Kroeger often found himself in roles--even in Television and Film--portraying men as old as their 60s and 70s. And in Radio, Kroeger, true to his reputation, was still portraying characters aged from 8 to 80.

Television was a bit kinder to him than Film. His Film characterizations tended to become more and more sinister and evil with each passing year, while his Television work, while clearly leaning more toward his darker characterizations, provided many truly delightful, against-type characterizations throughout the remainder of his extraordinary Television career.

All told, Berry Kroeger's Radio career eventually spanned almost forty years, his Film career almost thirty years, his Television career almost forty years, and his Stage career, for all intents, his entire adult life in one capacity or another.

And yet, in spite of the rather cruel typecasting of this great character actor, he was by all contemporaneous accounts, unfailingly generous to peers and students alike, constantly volunteering for one worthy cause or another, a tireless contributor to his community theatre productions--great and small--throughout his life, a multi-talented artist in several disciplinces, and an overall truly fine gentleman in every respect.

While we miss him, an extraordinary number of his performances over Television, Radio and even Film are now readily available--a fitting tribute to one of Radio's truly great unsung workhorses.

Born an English subject, Lester Tremayne and his family emigrated to the U.S. when Tremayne was only four years old. His mother, Dolly Tremayne, had been a stage actress in England. Tremayne, told to quit school by his father, began working in community theater, performing in Vaudeville and as a barker in area amusement parks.

At the age of seventeen, Les Tremayne landed his first job in Chicago Radio, going on from there to scores of appearances in serial melodramas, adventures and variety and drama revues of the era. But it wasn't until 1936 that Tremayne appeared as a lead; he replaced Don Ameche in the popular Drama anthology, First Nighter.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1943, then to New York. It was in New York that he starred with Bob Crosby on The Old Gold Show until Crosby had to enter military service in 1943 for two years. The young--and relatively unknown--Jackie Gleason replaced Bob Crosby. Les Tremayne also appeared in the Thin Man adventures and The Falcon adventures, trading places with Les Damon and vice versa over the run of both programs, as Les Damon left for his own military service in the AAF. The two actors often found themselves filling in for each other during the 1940s and 1950s. Tremayne married Radio actress Eileen Palmer on May 2, 1940 (see left). Tremayne later married beautiful young Radio actress Alice Reinhart, on December 10, 1945, remembered for her early starring appearances in Radio's Flashgun Casey. Tremayne and Reinhart also performed together on the WOR-Mutual Broadcasting morning breakfast show, The Tremaynes.

With as many as 35 to 45 appearances a week for much of the late 1930s and early and late 1940s, Les Tremayne was quickly becoming one of America's most often heard Radio personalities. Some wag has circulated an estimate that Tremayne appeared in over 30,000 Radio episodes during his career. Even at a solid average of forty-five appearances a week, that would have him doing nothing else for over thirteen and a half years. The actual number of Radio appearances is probably half of that number, but still kept Les Tremayne one of New York's busiest Radio performers. Tremayne later appeared on Stage in Heads or Tails (1947) and for an 18 month Broadway run of Detective Story (1949).

Possessed of one of Radio's most authoritative voices, Tremayne's transition to a long line of Television and Film appearances was a natural progression. Tremayne's Film work included The Racket (1951), the sci-fi masterpiece, The War of the Worlds (1953), A Man Called Peter (1955), and North by Northwest (1959) as the frustrated auctioneer forced to cope with Cary Grant's ridiculous bidding.

No stranger to bad guy roles, Tremayne was just as versatile in roles as shifty executives, cheating husbands, and scheming middlemen as he was in roles as doctors, generals and judges. He took on all roles with equal aplomb in such popular Television staples as Perry Mason (1957), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), 77 Sunset Strip (1958), and a bewildring array of another 400 Television appearances over his forty year career in Television.

Les Tremayne Prefers
Stage Roles; Raps Video

By TOM E. DANSON

HOLLYWOOD—"There's something 'about the theater you just can't get away from," Les Tremayne told me yesterday. "It's real stimulating, with always a new audience and much more reaction."  Les is well remembered by radio fans for his leading role in the weekly radio 'The Little Theater off Times Square," co-starring Barbara Luddy, which he did for 10 years following Don Ameche.
Because of picture work, his radio activities are kept on the light side now, with the daytime stripper, "The Woman in My House," being his only interest.  Tremayne's latest picture, which was independently produced and to be released by Paramount soon, is "War of Worlds," produced by George Pal, a fanatic on the science-fiction type movie.  A little of this science-fiction has rubbed off on Les, as he now is very excited about future things to come.
Says Tremayne:  "If they ever get a rocket ship trip planned to the moon and need volunteers to go—''I'll be first in line!"  This, of course he said without ever thinking to consult with his wife Alice, who I'm sure would not approve of his traipsing off on interplanetary adventures.
Les and his wife are amateur archeologists who enjoy the deep wilderness of Mexico ,when time permits, scratching for bits of ancient curiosity.
"Alice and I had our very first date in a museum," he said, "and from there we have studied at several schools together."  Further questioning revealed their studying at Columbia, UCLA and the Museum of Natural History, in New York.
Les says television leaves him cold.  "I think they've made too big a thing of it without letting it grow—it's like forced feeding," he said.  "Its far too strenuous for the ultimate results," he continued, "and much too intimate a medium.  It's a great invention—don't get me wrong—but I don't want to drop dead from it!"
"After summing it all up," Les concluded, "I still think the theater is the greatest."

Having completed a thirty year career in Radio and a forty year career in Television, Tremayne went into semi-retirement in the 1980s, still appearing occasionally for voice-overs and documentaries. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1995.

Les Tremayne passed away from natural causes at the age of 90. One of Radio's most enduring voice talents, Les Tremayne's powerful, yet mellow, voice is still heard tens of thousands of times daily by Golden Age Radio fans both old and new. In that respect Les Tremayne's body of work remains a timeless contribution to the Performing Arts of the 20th Century.

Les Damon was born in Providence, Rhode Island. After graduating from high school, Damon got his start in Theatre with the Albee Stock Company in Providence. He also traveled to England to study with the Old Vic Company in London. Based primarily on the East Coast, Damon lived in Califon, NJ for most of his Radio career.

Upon his return from England, Damon enlisted in the Army Air Forces, serving in the China-Burma Theater of World War II, flying over 'the hump' to provide desparately needed supplies and materiel to Chiang Kai Shek's beleagured Chinese Army. Damon was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.

Les Damon's illustrious career spanned over 30 years on Stage and in Radio and Television. Upon his return from World War II, Damon began his acting career in Radio. After performing in a variety of straight dramatic roles through the mid-1940s, Les Damon began voicing lead roles in The Lone Journey (1941), The Thin Man (1946), The Right to Happiness (1947), The Adventures of The Falcon (1950), and ABC Mystery Theater (as Inspector Mark Saber of The Homicide Squad) (1952). He's probably best remembered for his role as Michael Waring 'The Falcon' in Radio's The Adventures of The Falcon, a role he seems to have enjoyed a great deal. His fans reciprocate that enjoyment to this day.

Damon often worked with his wife, Radio actress Ginger Jones. The two met on Radio assignments and married in 1943. An example of Les Damon's romantic nature is highlighted in this quote from the San Antonio Express, November 10, 1943:

Rice on Ice

"Ginger Jones, of the new daytime serial "Brave Tomorrow" is sporting a beautiful African turquoise set in diamonds, which, on investigation, proves to be more than a mere ring. In a tiny compartment under the stone are two grains of rice which her husband, actor Les Damon, retrieved from his trouser cuffs after their wedding."

The 1950s marked Les Damon's debut in Television, with character roles in The Jackie Gleason Show (1954), The Honeymooners (1955), The Dick Powell Show (1962), The New Breed (1962), and Have Gun Will Travel (1962). Damon also garnered recurring roles in The Guiding Light (1952), As The World Turns (1956), Kitty Foyle (1958), The Edge of Night (1958), and Window On Main Street (1961)

Les Damon's smooth, yet authoritative voice made him ideal for roles such as urbane detectives, slick businessmen, or worldly-wise fatherly types or mentors. His crisp delivery was his trademark, punctuating expositional narratives or commands with just enough menace to keep the listener rivetted to the speaker.

Hospitalized for chest pain at UCLA Medical Center, Damon succumbed to a massive heart-attack at the age of 53. He was survived by his wife, Ginger Jones and daughter Lisa.
