The Case of The Moth-eaten Mink

57-12-14
This was the original series pilot, filmed in 1956. The only members of the cast with an extensive Golden Age Radio background were Raymond Burr, himself and of course Ray Collins.

Before there was Perry Mason on Television there were over 2700 episodes of Perry Mason on Radio. The program ran from 1947 through 1955, only a year before this pilot episode of Perry Mason for Television was filmed.

Here's Episode #2203 for you to listen to, from June 27, 1951 in Perry Mason over Radio:

The Case of The Green-eyed Sister

58-02-08
[Didja Know? --
Surly Morris Ankrum, probably better known to teens of the 50s through 70s as 'that guy in all the Sci-Fi movies,' had deep roots in The Golden Age of Radio going back to CBS Radio's first attempt at a Shakespeare revival in 1937's Shakespeare Festival series--he performed in at least six of the productions.

Born Stephen Morris Nussbaum, the professional name change seemed well-advised, even though the result was equally obtuse. But of the entire ensemble cast of returning regulars to Perry Mason, season after season, Morris Ankrum was one of the most highly suited to the task.

He graduated from U.S.C.'s Law School [Go Troy!], was a practicing attorney for several years and was an Economics professor at U.C. Berkeley and Drama student and teacher at its famous Little Theatre--before ever setting foot on a sound stage in the 1930s. You might want to keep that in the back of your mind the next time you watch him go toe to toe with either Perry or D.A. Burger.

Our personal favorite of his roles over the years was as the role-reversing Colonel Fielding from Invaders From Mars (1953), a movie that still gives us the willies every time it pops up in a Sci-Fi retrospective.

Morris Ankrum: Shakespearean actor in 1930s Radio, practicing attorney, Economics professor, character actor in 150 feature films, over 400 television productions, countless stage productions with The Pasadena Playhouse . . . and Renaissance Man of the first order.

The only reason he didn't see the entire run of Perry Mason through to its end is because he passed away during its eighth season. But not before appearing in 23 of the--by then--210 episodes of the run.

A brilliant mind, several brilliant careers, a fitting final flourish via the enduring legacy of Perry Mason. . . . and our personal favorite Golden Age Radio alumnus judge of the run.]

Episode #029

The Case of The Hesitant Hostess

58-04-05

[Didja Know? --
Cud-chewing Joe Gibbs in this episode was none other than legendary Golden Age Radio actor Ned Wever. The few moments during this episode when he wasn't ruminating, he delivered some of the season's most foreboding and hair-raising looks, leers and disdainful glances. He looked like he'd as easily throw a few slugs into you as dismiss you entirely. So who was this very image of evil?

One of Golden Age Radio's most beloved, long-running serial melodrama performers.

Ned Wever as Dr. Loring on Portia Faces Life (1941)
Ned Wever as Dr. Loring on Portia Faces Life (1941)

Ned Wever was Dr. Anthony Loring for fifteen years in Young Widder Brown, for sixteen years as Jerry Miller in Big Sister, for eight years in Betty and Bob, Lora Lawton, Kate Hopkins--Angel of Mercy, and in countless hundreds of other character roles throughout The Golden Age of Radio.

But prior to his thirty-six year career on the Stage and in Radio, Ned Wever was a respected lyricist, having penned many of the popular songs of the 1930s, as well as Stage production lyrics going back to as early as 1925 stage revues.

Ned Wever also appeared in Radio in Dick Tracy, Bulldog Drummond, The Shadow, Under Arrest, and perhaps most appropriately, in Her Honor, Nancy James, as D.A. Anthony Hale for two years.

This was Ned Wever's only appearance in Perry Mason, but clearly one of the most effective of the season. So it is that one of Golden Age Radio's most beloved long-running soap opera performers is cast, against-type as one of Season One's most chilling villains. Brilliant casting and a highly memorable performance by one of The Golden Age of Radio's giants.]

The Case of The Substitute Face
Episode #032

The Case of The Substitute Face

58-05-10

[Didja Know? --
This was the first of six appearances by Lurene Tuttle during the nine seasons of Perry Mason. Known as ''The First Lady of Radio,'' it's a safe bet that Lurene Tuttle has appeared opposite virtually every Golden Age Radio actor whose face and name appears on these pages. Let's repeat that challenge:

If you bet someone that Lurene Tuttle has appeared over Radio with every other Golden Age Radio actor featured on these pages, you'd almost certainly win your bet.

Lurene Tuttle was arguably the most versatile, durable, and ubiquitous young actress to span the entire era of The Golden Age of Radio. She had only a handful of equals in that regard: Virginia Gregg, Irene Tedrow, Betty Lou Gerson and Lillian Buyeff at best. All of whom, by the way, appeared at least twice each in Perry Mason.

There were certainly another stellar group of equally prominent character actresses of the era who appeared in hundreds--if not thousands--of serial melodramas of the era, but almost always in a long-running, recurring role.

Lurene Tuttle certainly qualifies as the house mother of one of Golden Age Radio's most exclusive sororities--the handful of Radio actresses who could portray two, four or as many as six different characterizations in one production. And indeed, defy anyone listening to identify every one of them.

Known far and wide in Radio as one of the medium's consistent scene-stealers, her versatility and range were nothing short of phenomenal throughout the era. Virginia Gregg and Betty Lou Gerson come perhaps closest to Lurene Tuttle's utter dominance in female roles throughout The Golden Age of Radio.

And as each of them were fond of repeating time and time again, over the medium of Radio, it didn't matter one bit what you looked like in person. In Radio you could become anyone your skills and training could portray.

It comes as no surprise to Golden Age Radio fans that Perry Mason's casting directors repeatedly turned to seasoned Radio actresses to deliver their most challenging and surprise-ending performances. That was their metier over Radio. Honed and crafted over thousands of Radio performances.

Lurene Tuttle isn't the dog in the manger in this episode, but you're never really quite certain until the very end. You never can be, when Lurene Tuttle's in the mix. That was her genius in Radio, and she transitioned her craft into Television with equal effectiveness over the years, albeit consigned to more matronly roles throughout that second half of her remarkable career. And yet, in spite of that imposed limitation, every bit the scene-stealer right to the end.

Her six appearances in Perry Mason were no exception.]

[Notes: We cheated a bit with this episode. The Lee Miller who portrayed the Nevada State Trooper in this episode wasn't a Radio actor. But he was Raymond Burr's stand-in double for the entire run of the original Perry Mason on television. You'll have to admit that his build and appearance are strikingly similar to Burr's.

Also note that this is not the same Lee Miller who portrayed the Deputy Sheriff in episode #9. That Lee Miller was indeed a Golden Age Radio actor.

This was the season closer, wrapping up a premiere season of appearances by no less than 180 unique Golden Age Radio actors.

Paisano Productions put these first 39 episodes in the can in only 41 weeks, with Raymond Burr carrying as much as 70% of the dialogue in each episode.]
